About Me
Meet Winston
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 7-8 Years
Estimated Weight: 29-30 Pounds UPDATE - 18 JUNE 2023: Winston is a love, sweetheart, and quite a delight. He is one of our favorite foster beagles. He has a short tail that is always waging. In fact, the movement reminds us of a propeller. Winston would do wonderfully with a family. The neighborhood kids (ages 3+) love him, and he loves to be with them. He would also love another dog for companionship and fun. He does have energy and loves to play. Winston is not an alpha dog, and he doesn't like alpha dogs that dominate him. He prefers another dog that just enjoys playing with him and not jumping on him or being aggressive.
Winston has been with us for over 6 months. He is more secure and confident. His separation anxiety is gone, and we no longer crate him when we leave. We're usually gone about 2 hours, and there has never been an issue. His crate is located in the living room and is never closed. Winston seems to prefer it as his place where he won't be bothered. He also sleeps in his bed at the foot of our bed.
Winston is not a cuddler but LOVES to be petted and scratched. Anytime his name is called he gladly trots over so he can be loved. When we're on a walk he wants to meet every dog and person that comes along. He expects love from everyone. Typical beagle, loves to smell and scents are an important part of the walks. When he gets a scent he follows it and we follow along. When he gets to the end of the scent he does the beagle howl. He is not a noisy dog. He will bark when the doorbell rings and when he sees someone with a dog walking in back of our house. He does not try and make a break for it when the door is open to visitors or accepting packages/mail. Of course we don't leave the door open for a long period of time. When he needs to go out to do his business he stands by the back door which can be seen from our living room. Our backyard is not fenced so he is on a lead. When he wants to come in he stands by the back door and usually it only takes 1 bark to let us know he wants in.
He has many sweet idiosyncrasies. He makes the cutest noises when being petted or settling down for a rest. When given a treat he will daintily take it and then run off with it to eat it in his crate. 3 days a week Winston goes on walks with a friend and her King Charles terrier. When they come to the door he can barely contain himself. He's so excited to see them! When he gets out to join them, he's very gentle with that dog, and they trot along together. Our cat has come to the realization Winston is not a threat and is not nasty to Winston. Winston has always been patient and non-confrontational with our cat.
Winston will be a great family dog. Whoever adopts him will be very, very lucky!
NEW -21 JANUARY 2023 (from foster family): Winston came to BREW after his owner died. He was given up along with another beagle who was his life long companion. Sadly, the other beagle died shortly after they were given up. Winston does miss having a friend. He needs to be adopted into a home with another dog. We have a cat who does not enjoy our fosters. Winston attempted to be friends with her, and she let him know immediately it wasn't going to happen. He now ignores and avoids her, but if there is a cat that's friendly, Winston would be just fine with that.
Winston does have some separation anxiety and, due to his past, it's understandable. He follows us around the house and likes to be with us wherever we are. Most of the time we're home, but when we leave the house for 1-2 hours, we put him in his crate with a toy and chew toy, usually a marrow bone filled with peanut butter.
Winston has a basket full of toys - the squeakier the better. He enjoys taking the toys out one at a time and carrying them to whatever special place in the house he decides he likes the best. We'll find toys all over because it can change from day to day. He's still figuring out the game of fetch. He loves when you throw the toy, but he doesn't quite know to bring it back yet. Usually he'll take off to his spot of the day. He likes to chew, so we make sure he has chew toys and a marrow bone filled with peanut butter.
Winston is not a furniture dog. He prefers beds and blankets on the floor. He loves to 'nest,' and we give him blankets for his beds. He sleeps in our room at the foot of the bed in a doggie bed with a blanket. He'll stay there all night. He wakes up whenever we do. No need to worry if you're not an early riser, but if you are, then he's ready to go.
Winston needs stimulation, which is why another dog would be ideal. We give him enrichment activities which he enjoys (find the treat, throw toys, have him go out in the backyard to sniff). These are usually enough for him, but he always loves meeting new dogs and their company.
Winston, like most beagles, is a sweet and loving dog. The vet said he has some arthritis, but it does not slow him down at all. He's on Enalapril for high blood pressure, but the vet doesn't feel it is a life time med. He needs another blood test in about a month.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
