About Me
Meet Howler
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 8-9 Years
Estimated Weight: 29 Pounds
NOTE: Has been known to dig under fences. Can not be left outside alone in a fenced yard.
UPDATE - 5 JULY 2024: Hurray! We found a foster home for this love bug! Here is an update from his new foster family:
We love having Howler around, and it took very little for him to adjust to being in our house and our routine. He’s great on a leash, gets along amazingly with his foster brother, sleeps in a crate at night no problem, and knows to do his business outside. He’s exhibited zero separation anxiety, and we’ve had no issues when we leave him home alone. He is the sweetest dog, and he showers us with kisses.
We have taken him on many adventures, from the dog park to hiking trails, and he is as happy and well behaved as can be. At the same time, he is the perfect couch potato and will happily snore by our side.
Despite his name, Howler is actually pretty quiet! When he does bark (usually at squirrels), his hoarse bark makes everyone around him laugh. He is truly the most endearing guy with the funniest quirks, and he would be an excellent pet for anyone willing to give this sweet dog a chance.
UPDATE - 23 MAY 2024: How can anyone resist this gorgeous face? We thought we had a foster home for this handsome dude, but that fell through. Howler has been with us a long time and has been trying to find a foster home or forever home, but he just hasn't had any luck. He can be sneaky and escape under fences or dash through a door, but, otherwise, he will make a perfect pet for someone who is interested in adopting an older boy.
UPDATE - 13 JANUARY 2024: Hi, Howler here. Just want to let everyone know that just because my name is Howler does not mean I am loud. I like to say howler is short for hilarious as I always look like I am laughing when you chase me. I am a short dude with a big personality. I love to have a great time. I love walkies. Also can not be trusted off leash in a fenced area because I always look for a way to escape, explore and meet new people. I would be great in an apartment!
UPDATE - 7 MAY 2023: Howler is now fully vetted and available for adoption. He can be a bit of an escape artist, so he either needs a very secure yard or limited to leash walking.
NEW - 15 FEBRUARY 2023: Howler is a sneaky beagle boy who was given up to the Abingdon Animal Shelter in Virginia because he’s a door dasher. No other information was given. He does respond well to a firm word, and he’s super sweet and likes to give little puppy kisses. He’s friendly and good with other dogs. He has a cherry eye that needs repair. He will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
