About Me
Meet Malik
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 1-2 Years
Estimated Weight: 23 Pounds
UPDATE - 6 JULY 2023: Malik shows us more of his personality each day. He loves toys and playing with his foster (beagle) sister and (toddler) brother. He keeps a close eye on his foster mom while she works during the day and overall enjoys being close to his humans. Malik has a true beagle knack for counter surfing and finding any packaging that crinkles - spare CPAP parts are his favorite! The great news is that he’s very good about getting down when told and giving non-food items back. Although he is less food motivated now compared to when he first arrived, he eats very quickly and we definitely recommend having a slow feeder bowl for him.
Malik pees and poops on the leash and is still very comfortable in his crate. He will go into it on his own to nap. He’s also pretty quiet for a beagle and only bays if he sees deer or when he gets really excited while playing with another dog. He’s an all around wonderful pup and his playful, gentle and sweet personality will be immediately apparent from the moment you meet him!
UPDATE - 20 JUNE 2023: Malik continues to be a total sweetheart. After settling in to his foster home, he has not shown any further signs of food aggression or dominance. His house training is also progressing steadily. Malik loves snuggling with his foster parents, playing with squeaky toys, and going on long walks and hikes. He does better on a leash that any other beagle we’ve ever met! No pulling or straining, and even though he loves to sniff, he is great about moving along after a few seconds. He does really well in the car and in his crate, but he does get a little upset when his foster family leaves the house without him. That is made a lot easier with a tasty treat to snack on when they leave. Malik is a wonderful family dog, and we think he would be happy with or without a doggy companion.
UPDATE - 16 JUNE 2023 (from new foster family): Malik is such a sweet boy and true love bug. He's great with other dogs and adults. He's overall very gentle with our two-year-old, but he did attempt to hump him a couple of times. 😆 We'll keep an eye on that and continue to positively reinforce his good behavior around little ones. As expected, given his background and how thin he is, he is very food motivated. So far, he has not shown any food aggression toward humans, but he was aggressive toward our other beagle last night when she was eating at a slower pace in another room. We'll continue to work on that with him. Malik does wonderfully in the crate, which is currently where he sleeps at night while we work on house training. More to come in the next few weeks!
UPDATE - 10 JUNE 2023: Malik joined us at our Adoption Day today and went home with a foster family! This is a very sweet guy who loved getting affection from humans. He is a sweet boy, so stay tuned as we learn more about how Malik adjusts to being a house pet.
UPDATE - 29 MAY 2023: Malik is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 12 MARCH 2023: Malik is a young beagle boy who is friendly, social and good with other dogs. He and Callie were dropped off together as strays to the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia. They are both skinny and food focused. Malik will be available after we get some weight on him and he gets checked out by our vet.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
