About Me
Meet Nakia
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 3-4 Years
Estimated Weight: 18 Pounds
NOTE: May need another dog in the home for confidence.
UPDATE - 6 SEPTEMBER 2024: Nakia has been in her foster home for about a year. She had a medical issues that needed to be addressed, but she is now in great shape and as sweet as can be. Nakia is an adorable, small beagle who is still looking for her forever home. Here is an update from her foster mom:
Nakia loves going on walks with resident dogs, Steve and Edie. She figured out the dog door very quickly, and she will go out on her own to play in the backyard or with her brother and sister. She wakes me up to let me know when she needs to go out in the morning and does an excellent job keeping her crate (or her condo!) clean during the day while I'm at work. I think she is gaining more confidence, so she could be a single dog, but it would probably help her to have someone around most of the day. She loves to carry her toys with her on our walks, and she has several favorites that she keeps nearby. Nakia has become a good traveler with long car trips and hotel stays. I've never seen her be aggressive, but she will growl at Steve - while wagging her tail. She still gets nervous with new people - she was a little overwhelmed at the last adoption day, but she did well with the other dogs.
Here is a cute video of Nakia when she first gets up in the morning:
UPDATE - 28 JANUARY 2024: Nakia is much more confident and wants to be in the middle of everything. We have made great progress on housebreaking, and she uses the dog door to do her business and to go out and play on her own and with Steve & Edie (resident beagles). Nakia is an early riser, so she makes sure we are all up and out the door for our morning walk. Here is a fun video of Nakia enjoying a chewie in one of her favorite spots:
I think she would do best in a home with other dogs or with someone who can keep her engaged.
UPDATE - 13 NOVEMBER 2023 (from foster mom): Nakia was really shy when she first came home with us, but she now takes charge every morning getting us up and out for our morning walk. She's still skittish around strangers, but once she sees that someone is okay with me, Steve, and Edie (Steve and Edie are resident beagles), she will get in line for attention and pets. More about Nakia:
- She is comfortable with a routine, and we are using that to help in the last hurdle of housebreaking. During her walks she focuses on all of the amazing smells and being out with her siblings, so I have been taking her out in the backyard after her meals to do her business. We are trying to get away from using pee pads. She likes to be outside with her brother and sister, but she doesn't use the dog door on her own.
- She loves playing with her toys and taking everything out of the toy basket until she selects just the right one. Here is a video of her playing with one of her favorite toys: Nakia and her Toy
- She gets along well with Steve and Edie, but I do feed them in separate locations so she doesn't get muscled out. We haven't encountered any cats, so I don't know how she feels about them.
- She does not like loud noises - trash day is not her favorite.
UPDATE - 9 SEPTEMBER 2023: Nakia went to a foster home today, so stay tuned as we learn more about this shy girl!
NEW - 20 JULY 2023: Nakia is a small beagle girl who is a little reserved and unsure about what is happening to her. She was dropped off as a stray with Natasha to the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown. She is fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
