UPDATE - 6 FEBRUARY 2025: From Virgina Street Hustler to Maryland Winter Olympian! ❄️🕺⚖️ If there were a gold medal for "Winter Fun," Bronx would be at the top of the podium! He cannot get enough of the fluffy stuff and is currently spending his days learning to "ice skate" in the backyard. It’s a hilarious sight to see him doing his best Scooby-Doo impression—legs spinning in place like a cartoon before sliding across the yard to keep up with his foster brothers. Having Bronx in our home for nearly three months has allowed us to witness him blossom into a fantastic house companion, transitioning from a mystery stray from Virginia to a fully integrated, snow-loving, cuddle-addicted member of the family.
We’ve been tracking his hilarious evolution through the "Bronx Performance Index":
The "Slither" Scale: He has officially evolved into a part-time snake. If there is a patch of carpet or a sunbeam, Bronx is on his back, slithering and wiggling to find the perfect "vibes." It’s roughly 10% Beagle and 90% Uncooked Noodle.
The "Food Bandit" Parole: He’s officially been paroled from his history of "Bronx Banditing" other dogs' bowls. He’s graduated to a "big boy" bowl and has realized that honest work (sitting politely) gets him more treats than a life of crime!
The "Air Jail" Quotient: He’ll go from 100mph backyard zoomies to "limp noodle" mode the second you scoop him up like a baby. He’s the only inmate we know who actually auditions for more time in "Air Jail" lock-up.
Now that the holiday slump is over, Bronx is thriving on a routine. He’s excellent in his kennel for a few hours, though his puppy energy is still high. Pro-tip: invest in heavy-duty chew toys and treats to keep those busy hound jaws happy! While he hasn't exactly mastered recall yet (he is a Beagle, after all!), he isn't a "bolter"—he won’t just sprint into the nether like some hounds; he just prefers to take the scenic route back to you. Bronx lives by a simple motto: Play Hard, Cuddle Hard. He’s basically a high-speed cartoon character in the yard and a professional (if slightly gassy) weighted blanket on the couch—the only thing missing from his permanent roster spot is you.
UPDATE - 16 JANUARY 2026: New Year, New Tricks: Bronx is Ready for You! Whether you call him Bronxley, Bronxtopher, or Bronxephus, this boy is officially answering to the call of a forever home! Currently busy making love to a bone on the living room floor, Bronx has been hitting some major milestones lately. He’s officially earned his gold star for house-training (all potties are outside!) and has mastered both "sit" and "down" for a tasty treat. He’s even showing off a natural recall that proves he’s ready to be a loyal companion. When he isn’t busy being a good boy, he’s perfecting his "snake" impression—slithering on his back or sleeping belly-up—and he’s a total sucker for "Air Jail," happily letting you cradle him like a baby when you need to move him or get him to chill for a minute. Brave, goofy, and deeply affectionate, Bronx is the perfect blend of puppy energy and cuddle-bug sweetness.

UPDATE - 30 DECEMBER 2025: Ring in the New Year with Bronx: The Best Gift You Didn't Find Under the Tree! While the holiday decorations are coming down, one very special treasure is still waiting for his forever home. Meet Bronx, a 1-year-old, 25-pound bundle of copper-colored joy with amazing eyes and the best white “socks.” During the holidays, he earned the sophisticated nickname "Bronxley" from his foster family because he’s such a little gentleman—even when he was "helping" foster parents and his beagle foster brothers, Toby and Bentley, unwrap their gifts. Bronx is a social butterfly who thrived during the holiday hustle and bustle, proving that his heart is just as big as his hound-dog sniffer.
Bronx is the ultimate partner for your New Year’s resolutions. Looking to get more steps in? This boy has the endless puppy energy you’re looking for! Whether it’s a trip to doggy daycare, a long walk, or a game of fetch, Bronx is ready to be your wingman. He recently experienced his first taste of snow and it was pure comedy—watching him pounce and play in the winter weather is a guaranteed way to start your 2026 with a laugh. Most importantly, Bronx is a friend to everyone; he has been introduced to people big and small and has shown a very loving, gentle nature toward little ones. He was inseparable from our niece and nephew (ages 6 and 4) and would make an amazing, incredibly loyal family dog that can help wear out the kids and himself!
He is currently working on some "New Year, New Me" goals. He is a pro at the dog door, though he’s still learning that it’s for potty breaks and not just for constant sniffing expeditions! He’s a bit of a puller on the leash because the world is just too exciting to walk slowly, and in true beagle fashion, he’s still perfecting his "no counter-surfing" house rules. After a day of play, he is happy to sleep in his favorite circle bed or snuggle up with his humans.
Bronx is a truly special guy who is ready to transition from "foster" to "forever." If you’re looking for a loyal, energetic, and affectionate companion to start the year with, Bronx is waiting for you!
UPDATE - 17 DECEMBER 2025 (from foster family): The Beagle We Want For Christmas Is You: Meet Bronx Bomber! Bronx is a spirited young man, approximately one year old and weighing in at a perfect 25 pounds of solid love. This handsome fellow, with his stunning copper coloring, is a vibrant mix of 80% Beagle and a dash of Coonhound/Foxhound, making him the quintessential hound: loyal, affectionate, and led by his incredible (loud) nose. Found as a friendly stray in Virginia, his history is a mystery, but his future is bright and full of potential. Right now, Bronx’s number one wish on his Christmas list is a permanent spot on a warm couch next to his forever family.
If we had to use five words to describe him, they would be: Derpy, Playful, Affectionate, Loyal, and Adaptable. Bronx is a confident and very brave boy who hasn't met a vacuum or lawnmower he couldn't conquer! His favorite winter activities include zooming around the yard, chewing on safe toys, engaging in playful wrestling matches with other dogs, and then immediately collapsing into a cuddle puddle with his favorite people. Bronx is a needy boy in the best possible way, he wants to be where the action is and will make his family feel incredibly loved. He’s already crate-trained (he loves his "little cave"!) and is making excellent progress with a dog door and a consistent schedule for house-training.
As a young hound, Bronx requires an active family ready to embrace his boundless energy and famous beagle nose! He’s the kind of walker who needs a harness and a patient person at the other end of the leash as he practices his zig-zag sniffing (a non-negotiable part of being a beagle!). While he barks when playing or responding to other dogs, his voice is still developing, sounding adorably like a pubescent teenage boy, which is just another endearing part of his unique charm. Bronx adores other dogs, big and small, but he has a strong prey drive and must be in a cat-free home as he views them as something to chase. Although, I think he will adapt with additional training. Although untested with young children, his general adaptability suggests he could be a fine family pet with proper introductions.
The most important thing his future family needs to know is this: Bronx is a truly great and special guy who will make a fantastic addition to almost any family. He is adaptable, chill when needed, and has the loyal heart of a hound ready to dedicate himself to you. This holiday season, open your heart and home to the Bronx Bomber. Let him bring his goofy personality and unwavering devotion to your New Year!
Bronx’s Wish List:
Active Lifestyle: A family ready for daily play, walks, and fun adventures to match his energetic spirit.
Fenced Yard Requirement: A secure, fenced-in yard is a must as he is an opportunistic escaper, though he has demonstrated good recall. Otherwise, he must be leashed. This is essential for his safety!
Canine Companions: He gets along great with other dogs, so a friendly canine sibling would be a bonus!
A Cat-Free Home: Due to his strong chase drive, he requires a home without feline family members. However, I believe with work (and maturity) this can be mitigated.
Training & Consistency: Owners who will maintain a consistent schedule to help him perfect his house-training skills.
UPDATE - 6 NOVEMBER 2025: Hurray for Bronx! He is now in a foster home, so stay tuned as we see how he adjusts.
UPDATE - 8 NOVEMBER 2025: What an incredibly sweet boy! Bronx joined us at today's Beaglefest and was such a good boy! He liked hanging out with the volunteers. We decided to do a DNA test on him. Here are the results: 80% Beagle, 15% Coonhound/Foxhound, 5% a bunch of other breeds! He is adorable and still available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 22 OCTOBER 2025: Bronx is a friendly and playful beagle mix who was a stray from the Cumberland Animal Shelter in Virginia. His history is unknown. He has beautiful copper coloring. Bronx is available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
