About Me
Boris is improving with his training to not jump on the sofa and go to his bed, instead. However, he still wants to jump on people to greet them. He is not too big and not aggressive with the jumping, but we are working on curbing the habit. He would be a great family dog as he is playful with everyone.
UPDATE - 4 MARCH 2020: Boris has been with us for two weeks. He joined us when we had two other beagles and did okay. But, with one of the beagles adopted on Saturday, there is a noticeable change. He is much more relaxed, which is saying a lot of our little bundle of energy. The other beagle with us has a set pattern and doesn’t like toys, so Boris is happy as can be with the arrangement. He likes walking with the other dog and playing with him. Boris loves to sleep with us and is a great bed dog; he just adjusts to your moving around and goes right back to sleep. He loves to cuddle and play. He is still having issues with jumping on the sofa without permission. Now with only two dogs, we have increased our training time with Boris and it is already showing results. But, Boris will need a bit more training to overcome this issue. An Adopting family will need to be aware with small children as he will jump on them if they are seated on the sofa. He just likes being in a lap. Boris has tossed a few throw pillows around the room while we were away, but he sticks to his toys for chewing. He has not had any accidents in the house and seems to do fine if you take him out in the morning and again when arriving back home. Overall, Boris is friendly and playful. He sleeps when you sleep and he greets you with smiles, licks and a wagging tail when it is time to get up. UPDATE - 25 FEBRUARY 2020: Boris is a bouncy, playful, middle-aged beagle who likes his one-on-one time with his human. He likes taking walks with our other dogs, but he insists on being held in our laps whenever anyone sits on the sofa. We are working on getting him to sit and wait until asked to be on the sofa. The obedience is there when the other dogs are not in the room and when he is not excited about you just arriving home. I’m confident that he can learn with a little more one-on-one time. He also loves to play with us and with his toys. However, he doesn’t like to share play time with the other dogs when toys are involved. We ventured to the dog park. and Boris had a great time with all the dogs. There were about 25 big, medium and small dogs at the park, and he liked them all and played well. However, when a ball was introduced, he was upset that he couldn’t have it. And, the minute anyone sat down on the bench, he jumped in their lap. So, more training is needed in this area. With a little positive training Boris would be a great as a single pet or with just one more pet. He is now with two other dogs and does okay. But it is clear he craves attention. I love his youthful nature and his playfulness. UPDATE - 17 FEBRUARY 2020 (from his new foster home): Boris has been with us for 3 days now. He is friendly with our other two dogs, which are close to his size. My neighbor's big dog makes him nervous, and he retreats to me for reassurance. He enjoys sitting in the yard sunning himself and just taking in the birds. He alerts when delivery drivers pull up to the house and will howl when my other beagle howls. He stops when we reassure him or come to see what is up. We have a flap doggy door in one area and a hard flap door in another. He has already learned to use both doggy doors to go outside and do his business. He has no problem going up and down stairs and his not had an accident in the house or chewed on anything. He seems fine when we are away or when we are sleeping. We walk him using a harness, and he is much more comfortable with this than just a collar. He pulls less with the harness and almost no pulling if we are walking in the park or on a nature trail. He doesn’t do well on sidewalks by busy roads. He barks at each car and wants to chase after it. He doesn’t seem scared of the cars, just wants to chase and bark at them. Once I removed him from the high traffic area into a quieter neighborhood he walked fine and just whimpered when the occasional car went by. He isn’t distracted as much when walking with our other dog and clearly likes walking together with him. Boris is very affectionate and loves to sit in your lap. If you do not want him on the sofa or in your lap you direct him to his doggy bed and he happily retreats there. He also plays well with our other dogs and shares fine. We have tested them with treats, food and bones. He does like to be next to me if I’m petting the other dogs. He wants to be the winner for attention. UPDATE - 15 FEBRUARY 2020: Boris joined us at the adoption event today and wore us out! This boy has energy! He was a little noisy, so he wouldn't do well in an apartment or townhouse. He needs lots of room to run off his energy, so his furever family should have a big fenced back yard where he can run and wear himself out. He is switching to a new foster home, so we will update you soon on how he is doing! UPDATE - 4 FEBRUARY 2020: Boris has finally started to learn his name and responds to basic commands like “come”. He and our female dog, Mila, are really starting to enjoy their play sessions together! They chase each other around the staircase playing cat and mouse. Boris does well with his bath time, his favorite part being a good playful towel drying. He loves to sit on the couch staring out the window either watching the cars drive by, or for one of us to come home. He gets so excited to us coming home and runs around waiting to jump in your lap and snuggle! Then settles down for a nice long nap. UPDATE - 19 JANUARY 2020 (from the foster family): We have been working very hard with Boris to see if he would warm up to our other dogs, but he still doesn't like our Lab/Dane mix. However, he has made great progress with the Mila, our Shepherd. Check out his new picture with Mila. He seems to do okay with female canines, which means he may not need to be an only dog. Boris gets along great with the cats. NEW - 10 JANUARY 2020: Boris was rescued by a family in central Virginia when they found him wandering on the streets. They found his original owner, but the owner already had many beagles and no longer wanted Boris. The family is fostering Boris for BREW and have had him for a few weeks. He is fully vaccinated and neutered. The family thought about keeping Boris themselves, but he isn't fond of their other two dogs, a German Shepherd and Lab/Great Dane mix. He may do better as an only dog or with another dog who is smaller and more submissive. We're not sure. Boris is a little uncertain around some dogs, but he is VERY attached to his people and loves to snuggle! He likes to rough house and do the “classic beagle bark” when excited and playing. He is great with the resident kids, ages 10 & 12, and he does fine with the cats. Boris will need some leash training, but, overall, he will make a wonderful pet for the right family! Let's find Boris a permanent, loving home!Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
