Ace
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 6 Years
Estimated Weight: 29 Pounds
UPDATE - 23 JULY 2025: Ace was adopted in December 2024, but he is now back with BREW when Ace had trouble warming up to one of the male humans, for no reason anyone could figure out. Ace can be a timid boy, and the family decided it would be best for Ace to be rehomed by BREW. The good news is Ace is back in a foster home while he waits for a new forever home. Here is an update from his new foster family:
Ace is settling in nicely after an owner surrender that unfortunately turned out to not be a good fit. He’s very timid and is still working on warming up to us. He has been doing really well with our other dogs (2 of our own and 1 foster), which we think have taught him how to play and be more confident. We believe he would do best going to a home with a social dog to help him learn to come out of his shell. We learned from his previous owner that he does great with cats, too!
He walks well on a leash and can pull at times, but nothing out of control; he’s just excited to be out on a walk. Walks are where he feels most confident, but as soon as we get home, he goes back to being anxious and nervous. He will also attempt to bolt out the front door, so make sure to get his harness on first before going on walks or make sure he’s blocked off from the front door if you enter/exit.
He’s housetrained and we haven’t had any accidents while home or when we’ve been away from home (we don’t crate him as he just chills while we’re gone - per our doggy cameras). He loves being outside and will lay in the sun all day if we let him. We think he would do well in a quiet household, with older children or no children, a large fenced in yard for him to enjoy, and another dog to play with is a must.
Overall he is a wonderful dog with a kind soul who occasionally cuddles, which is becoming more frequent, and is looking for a low energy home to enjoy with another dog or two. He takes treats very gently, is learning to jump on the bed for play time with our other beagles, and likes to put his paws up on the side of the bed in the morning when he is excited to get his day started.
UPDATE - DECEMBER 2024: Original adoption.
UPDATE - 12 NOVEMBER 2024 (from foster mom): Ace has been in our home for a little over a week. He's a nice but shy boy who is slowly coming out of his shell. He follows me around the house but is content to snooze in a warm, soft dog bed. He's also quiet in his crate and seems fine when we leave the house. Ace seems housetrained so far, but we keep an eye on him. He gets along with the resident dog, Daisy, and has started to play with her. You can also see that he is fine with the cats and will allow them to share the sun with him. Ace does his business on leash, but he can be a little pully because he loves to sniff all the things. He is a little skittish and gets startled by loud noises. Ace would probably do best in a quieter household but would be fine to have a furry friend. He would be a great companion for someone looking for a quiet, low-key beagle.
UPDATE - 2 NOVEMBER 2024: Ace joined us at Beaglefest today and went home as a fostered dog! We look forward to seeing how Ace does living in a home since he has been at our kennels for a while. Stay tuned!
UPDATE - 10 AUGUST 2024: Our dear Ace is done with his heartworm treatment, including the required rest period, and he is off and running! He is feeling and looking good and was able to join us at our Adoption Day today. He loved being walked around on a leash and has a nice balance of energy and down time. He was quiet and got along with everyone. Ace ended up going back to the kennels, but he is ready to go and hoping for a foster home or permanent home soon!
NEW - 22 JUNE 2024: Ace came to BREW as a stray from Richmond, Virginia. He had heartworms, so he had to go through a few months of treatment. He is now good to go other than needing 6 weeks of "quiet time." He will be ready for normal activity by the end of July. Ace is friendly and good with other dogs. He is available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
