About Me
Alpha
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 5 Years
Estimated Weight: 36 pounds
UPDATE - 25 SEPTEMBER 2025 (from new foster mom): Alpha is a total sweetheart who is learning what it's like to live in a home. Her crate is her safe space, and she'll retreat there when she's ready to relax. She sleeps overnight in the crate without a peep and has kept it clean. We're working on potty training, and she does well when she has access to a doggy door and backyard.
She's a little shy, but is curious about everything, and follows me around the house. She's shown very little beagle mischief so far, although there was some counter investigation and she has shown an interest in houseplants. She is very easily redirected with a gentle verbal correction.
She's a wonderful companion on walks and pulls less than the resident beagle. She's happy to walk at your pace and will check in with you regularly. We have walked on both city sidewalks and a large park and she prefers the pace of the park.
She is excited about mealtimes, but will often take a break before finishing her food, so if there are other dogs in the house you may need to ensure she's getting to eat her full meal.
She gets along very well with the resident beagle. She has tried to initiate some playtime, but backs off when she doesn't get a response.
Stay tuned for info on favorite toys as she continues to settle in!
UPDATE - 20 SEPTEMBER 2025: Great news for Alpha - after waiting patiently for many months, she is finally off to a foster home! She is a little taller than most beagles as she has some foxhound in her, but she is not huge and does relatively well on a leash. She is sweet and fairly low key. She got some lovin' at today's Adoption Day before she went off to her new foster home. Stay tuned as we see how Alpha adjusts to living in a house.
UPDATE - 26 APRIL 2025: Alpha joined us at today's adoption event and showed us her beautiful self! She was quiet and enjoyed going for walks with volunteers (she pulls on the leash, as do they all, but she wasn't jumpy or fighting the leash). She got along with all the other dogs. She is a taller girl since she has some foxhound mixed in, but she is no bigger than some of our larger beagles. Alpha is still available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 1 MARCH 2025: Alpha and her sister, Gabby, are tall beagle/foxhound mix girls who are looking for a new start in life. They were owner surrenders in Maryland because no one had time for them. No other information was provided. Alpha is friendly and good with most other dogs (she doesn't always like her sister!). She is available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
