About Me
Anjali
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 1 Year (born January 2024)
Estimated Weight: 24 Pounds
UPDATE - 8 APRIL 2025: Anjali joined our foster family in late Oct 2024. She was recovering from surgery and needed a soft place to land to rehab and prepare for her forever home. My husband and I and our other beagles have been the support she needed to help her become her amazing self.
Anjali is just over one year now and is amazingly smart, energetic, fun as all get out, and adorably cute. Although she is missing a back leg, her agility training and development of her back muscles provide her with full mobility. And this week she mastered the most difficult of challenges - getting up wood stairs. (Wood stairs are the most difficult because they are slippery, and a dog has no grip). The wood stairs were the last test of her muscle power. There is not anything my other beagles can do that Anjali can’t and, being younger, she shows them up on every outing.
Anjali is the perfect dog for just about anyone that needs a close companion and buddy to get them outside for a bit of exercise. She walks fine on a leash but does pull a bit when she sees other dogs and people as she is a greeter (just needs to say hello to everyone). She likes the yard and dog park. She adores toys and treats. She alerts to deer, rabbits, foxes and sometimes the neighbor’s cat sneaking under our deck. She eats and plays happily with my other beagles. Anjali accepts snacks and listens to "no" to wait for the snack unless other beagles are involved. She is more polite and follows commands better than my other beagles. She does great when I train her separately.
UPDATE - 10 FEBRUARY 2025: Anjali has now been with our foster family just over 90 days and she has thrived. She has just turned 1 year old and is loving life. She follows basic commands (she does just about anything with treat training), loves walking trails, playing in the yard, and lazing on the sofa with the family. She is a very social dog – enjoys playing with children, adults, and other dogs. She can’t get enough of chewy toys. The toys have been a great way to teethe her without her eating socks and dish towels. I used a variety of toys to help her entertain herself when we are away from the house. She is house trained and comfortable with a doggy dog. Anjali is vocal when she plays and greets you – it is not howling, it is a lot like talking loudly – difficult to describe and adorable.
Anjali loves walking in the morning (short walk before I leave for work) and a longer walk and play time in the evening. She loves dinner time and treats. And, when you eat, she does listen to ‘no’ command to not beg. She enjoys snuggling on the sofa in the evening and sleeps just fine through the night. A genuinely happy, adjusted dog.
UPDATE - 2 DECEMBER 2024: Anjali is just a joy to have with us. She is a special needs dog because she lost a back leg from an injury, but that has not slowed her down. Check out this video of Anjali at play! Anjali at Play
Anjali has wasted no time learning how to balance and maneuver with one back leg. With some assistance from an agility and obedience trainer, Anjali has improved in leaps and bounds (literally!). She loves to run in circles in the yard and play areas, she loves other dogs, and she loves walks. She has improved walking on a leash and now stops and comes when you encourage her with words. She has learned how to use the doggy doors and is in a usual pattern of going out to do her business in the morning and evenings. She is still a puppy at less than a year old, so she likes to romp, jump, and chase sticks. She does good with training tasks such as wait, stop, etc. except with my other beagles are in the mix – she just gets excited and wants to play as they all do.
Anjali has mastered a short set of carpeted stairs (up and down) but still has issues getting up wood stairs as they are slippery, and I don’t have a full set of carpeted stairs, so we're still working on this. She is still a bit skittish when she gets trapped on one side of the room and you move toward her too fast. She loves to cuddle up on the sofa with us and loves watching animals on TV. If there are chew toys at her disposal, she goes to them and leaves my socks alone. But, when I have forgotten to leave toys out for her, she has chewed on a few dish towels and put a few holes in my socks. She loves her doggy beds but chewed the filling out of one and I had to sew it. But, once I put a little bitter (no chew) spray on it she has left it alone. Overall, Anjali is a happy young dog that likes walks, hugs, treats, and toys.
NEW - 27 OCTOBER 2024 (from foster family): Anjali joined our beagle team on Sat Oct 19th directly from the veterinary hospital. She is less than a year old and had her left hind leg amputated after a severe injury. The tip of her tail was also damaged. Otherwise, she is a healthy young lady that doesn’t seem to know at all that she is missing a leg. She is rambunctious, and she loves chew toys and dish towels (click on this video of her enjoying a chew bone! Anjali).
We are just now starting to potty train her as she has only been without her post surgery protective cone for three days. But she is a quick learner and has had no accidents in the house yesterday or today. She is fast on walks – I speed walk, and she is polite and doesn’t pull but would like to. She wants to go a little faster but loves my walking trails.
We have several beagles and Anjali gets along just fine with all of them. She is a little shy when feeding – she waits for me to put all the other bowls down and then she takes hers. She is having issues sleeping through the night (wants to play around 1:30am), so I have been giving her calming treats (basic ones from the store) and they are working well.
Anjali rides fine in the car without a crate – I put down a doggy mat and she rides without issue. She has mastered going downstairs today, but not up – we will working on this and the doggy door this week.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
