Arthur II – Adopted April 2021

Arthur II – Adopted April 2021

About Me

Meet Arthur II
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 6-8 Years

Estimated Weight:  39 Pounds

UPDATE – 24 MARCH 2021 (from foster mom): Sweet Arthur has been with us for a week now (see videos, Arthur and Arthur and Friends. He is gentle, easy going, friendly and likes people and other dogs. A few bops on the head on the first day from the cats was all he needed to learn that they did not appreciate his enthusiastic sniffing! He avoids the cats and admires them from afar.

Arthur loves to be doted upon. He has soulful eyes and will gaze at you, soaking in all the love you will offer to him. He isn’t pushy though—if you feel like you’re done paying attention to him, he can take a hint!

Like many beagles, he also loves walks, treats and chew bones. Arthur is a strong boy when he picks up a scent so we are working on leash manners. A secure harness is a must. We use the kind with both a chest and belly strap on our beagles and fosters. Our road is an out and back—on the out he is pretty good, but on the back he seems to want to venture off course. I guess he wants new smells for the trip back!

He is building up his confidence here and we can tell that he really wants to be more carefree. He let himself play chase with the others today and has started to show some interest in toys. Arthur does NOT like squeakers! It spooks him and he won’t want to play with the toy anymore. Good thing for him, many of our resident dogs and previous fosters have removed or broken many squeakers here so he has other options! He spooks (but recovers easily) with other loud sounds so it’s possible young children might stress him out– we aren’t too sure yet!.

Arthur sleeps in his crate at night and doesn’t make a peep. Getting him in there isn’t too difficult if you have a nice soft and smelly treat to toss in. He has not yet mastered the stairs but he did master the cat door. Too bad the cat door is on the lower level and when he comes inside through it he is ‘trapped’ downstairs since he is afraid of the stairs. We will keep working on that!

This sweet boy has not yet tried to get on the furniture except for the extra-large beanbag. He often naps there with his foster sister Ruby. Arthur must be extra special for Ruby to let him sit there with her because she is a bit rude about that sometimes.

As far as housetraining goes, we haven’t had a single accident. He marks a bit outside but hasn’t tried it inside at all! Arthur does not yet signal to go outside but happily goes out with the pack when we call. The dogs are all crated when we are not home and he just naps in there.

Arthur is a delightful boy that has been very easy to assimilate into our pack and home.

UPDATE – 15 MARCH 2021: Arthur is now in a foster home, so let’s see how this boy does as a house dog.

UPDATE – 8 MARCH 2021: Arthur is now fully vetted and available for fostering/adoption.

NEW – 25 JANUARY 2021: This regal sweetheart is Arthur. He is estimated to weigh around 35+ pounds and is super sweet and friendly. All he wants is lots of love and attention. He is good with other dogs but was a stray at the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so his history is unknown. He will be available soon.

Q:  Can you tell me more about a specific dog?  Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?

A:  What we know is in the write up.  Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited.  Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.

Q:  Can I meet a specific dog?

A:  We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs.  Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.

Q:  How can I adopt a specific dog?

A:  You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt.  You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there..  It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you.  Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime.  But we are always getting new dogs.   You can see them on our website.

Q:  Can I add another dog to the list on my application?

A:  We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application.  It gives us an idea of what you are looking for.  Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.

Q:  I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted.  What happened?

A:  We do not hold dogs.  Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved.  But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
