About Me
-
UPDATE - 19 MAY 2019: Axel joined us for another adoption event today. We have had this boy for a long time, and he keeps hoping that someone will give him a chance at his forever home soon. Axel loves humans. He loves affection and is quite content when he is getting attention from people. He loves being walked on a leash and getting exercise. However, as we have known, Axel does not always do well around other dogs. He needs a home with no other dogs. He will be fine when walking on a leash as long as his new owners keep him away from other dogs. He did fine on a leash at the adoption event and only got grumpy when other dogs got too close. Axel has now been living in our kennels for over a year, so we are hoping to find the right family for him soon. UPDATE - 16 FEBRUARY 2019: Axel joined us at today's adoption event, and he did very well. He is now about 4 years old and weighs about 24 pounds. He is a very social, happy boy who loves people. If someone was loving on Axel and they started to walk away, he would give a little bark to ask them to come back. Axel doesn't always do as well with other dogs. We watched Axel carefully when he was around other dogs since that seems to be his trigger. He growled at a couple of dogs as the day went on, but his handler just led him away from any potential conflict, and he was fine. He had no trouble walking around outside on the leash. Axel needs a second chance, so we are hoping to find a family with no other dogs where Axel can be the family pet he is longing to be. UPDATE - 17 FEBRUARY 2018: Axel is back to looking for a new foster home. He ended up not getting along with the other resident foster beagle, so we are thinking he might do better as an only dog. We had him at the adoption event today, and he did okay with most dogs, but there were a couple of male dogs he just didn't like. He seemed to do best with our more submissive females. UPDATE - 24 JANUARY 2018: Axel has completed his vetting process and is now available for fostering or adoption. NEW - 18 JANUARY 2018: Axel is a handsome 3 year old beagle boy who is very friendly and good with people and other dogs. He was a stray in Madison County in Virginia, so his history is unknown. He will be available soon for fostering or adoption. He weighs about 22 pounds.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
