UPDATE - 7 DECEMBER 2022: A sweet puppy finds herself trying hard to make it on her own. She’s tried out a few humans, but she just can’t seem to find the right fit. Her foster home is great, and she has made some wonderful friends, but deep down she knows she wants something permanent - a family to call her own. Even though she has been passed over so many times, she still has hope that she will find her forever family soon.
UPDATE - 23 NOVEMBER 2022: Cassie has been with us for nearly 6 months, longer than any other foster dog we have had. She is so ready for her forever home. Our heart breaks for her each time she has been passed over.
She has a very sweet disposition with people and is very low key. She loves people and is good with neighbor kids. She is house trained and does well on a leash or roaming in a fenced yard. She really adapts well to changes in her environment and is eager to please.
She is active when you want her to be, but she’s also perfectly content to cuddle on the couch. She lets us know when she wants a pet (you’ll find her head in your arm pit) or a scratch (don’t mind the dog hair on your pants as she rubs up on you).
Cassie has done so much travelling and is just ready to settle down with a family that will appreciate how beautiful and sweet she is and give her ALL THE LOVE. The right fit has to be out there for her. She’s not giving up hope yet.
UPDATE - 12 SEPTEMBER 2022: Cassie has been in our foster home for 3 months. She is such a sweet and good natured dog, and we love having her in our home. She is happy to have the love and stability we provide, but deep down she longs for her forever home. She may prefer to be an only dog (some food aggression when other dogs are around, which we are managing), and she needs someone who will be patient with her occasional stubbornness around food. She suffers from terrible motion sickness, so we have been experimenting with different motion sickness medications. But none of this stops Cassie from enjoying her time cuddling and nudging her human for a good snuggle.
UPDATE - 22 JUNE 2022 (from foster family): It is a mystery to us why this girl has bounced around so much. She is simply stunning, with her long and slender body and beautiful, light eyes! She gets along with other dogs (except around food), but would do fine as the only dog. She is fully house- and crate trained. She has been left for longer periods in the crate without a problem and for short periods with run of the house and no issues. We even hear that she tolerates cats!
So what's the problem? It could be that she's a little food aggressive and needs to be separated from other dogs when there's food around. But with some close monitoring during meal and treat time, she's wonderful. It could be that someone wanted her as a running partner but did not realize that she likes to take her time and smell all the things. But if you don't mind running in place for a while until she's ready to move on, problem solved! It could be that someone wanted her to ride around in the car all day but didn't know that she gets carsick and drools a little when riding (ok, it's more like "soaks a bath towel" drools). But if she rides in a crate with a towel, cleanup can be manageable.
Whatever the reason, Cassie is very much ready to settle down. She is an amazing dog. Her look is so unique with the beagle/basset features, and did I mention her eyes?? She seems to love all humans and is eager to please (unless you run into a rabbit on a walk, then it's her terms!). She has been leash walked in her foster home and that requires some patience (since she loves those smells) and strength (don't let her slender build fool you, she's strong). She would love to have run of a yard where she can track the squirrel scents at her own pace (40-50 minutes might be enough).
And wherever she lands, she will love you to the moon and back!
UPDATE - 14 JUNE 2022: Cassie is now in a new foster home and is settling in well. She got into a little tussle with one of the dogs at her previous foster home (over a piece of food dropped by a mischievous cat!), but she is doing well with her current beagle companion. They don't snuggle, but they get along well and sleep next to each other. Cassie's new foster mom says Cassie has been an easy foster and would probably do fine with or without another dog buddy in the home. If there are other dogs in the home, we recommend they be fed separately.
UPDATE - 15 MAY 2022 (from foster family): Cassie is a sweet, lovable beagle girl. She is very good with other dogs and gets along with our cats as well. She has wonderful leash manners with the exception of needing to sniff everything! Like any good beagle, she enjoys a long walk followed by a longer nap on the couch. We have been crating her, which she is not a fan of. However, once she is in her crate she settles in and it is quiet. Cassie is not especially vocal, unless she is in the backyard and on an exciting scent. She does not bark in the house or on walks. Aside from a few accidents the first 2 days, she appears to be house trained. We are working with her on learning basic commands such as sit and stay. She does like spending time with our dogs, so she may benefit from living with another dog for confidence. She loves her people and will follow you from room to room.
UPDATE - 7 MAY 2022: Cassie is now in a foster home, so we will be learning more about her soon!
NEW - 6 MAY 2022: Cassie is a beagle/basset mix who is looking for her forever home. She’s sweet and has been somewhat quiet at the kennels but is said to be vocal when she gets on a scent. She gets along well with other dogs. She was originally from Spotsylvania, Virginia, where she was dropped at a shelter as a stray, so we don't know anything about her history. She was adopted from the shelter once, but she was returned for unknown reasons. We think she would do best in a home with a fenced yard where some barking will not be an issue. We haven't had a chance to test her much on a leash. According to the shelter, Cassie is good with cats. Cassie is fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
