UPDATE - 1 AUGUST 2024: We want to send out a THANK YOU to the Show Your Soft Side for giving BREW a Phoenix Fund Grant towards Chance's medical expenses. THANK YOU!!!!
UPDATE - 12 JUNE 2024: We needed to tend to a couple of health issues with Chance, but he is now doing great and available for adoption! Here is an update from his foster family:
Chance is the bestest boy. He’s so polite and well behaved. He’s potty trained, walks well on a leash, and is a happy and confident pup with great manners for meeting and playing with all other dogs. He takes treats so gently and carries his food bowl to his bed to eat every meal. His howl is sooo unique, it’s such a “woooooo” sound that you can easily distinguish it from other dogs. He thrives in social situations and is eager to meet fellow dogs and introduce himself to humans (treats help) while still checking in with his foster parents for pets and quick breaks to replenish his social battery. He loves cuddle puddles with his pup pal, Bjorn (another foster available for adoption), but also enjoys the quiet of a nice bed in a dark room away from the daily hustle and bustle of his WFH foster parents. Also, Chance wastes no time informing us that he’s happy to start a new day with a couple borks at the first sign of sun!
For potty breaks, he loves sniffing our whole yard and must perform a perimeter check to ensure the neighborhood is secure, and he won’t come in until he’s satisfied with his completed inspection. He also loves looking out our front windows during his self-appointed slots for the neighborhood watch and “woooo”-ing at people who walk by. He does the BEST head tilts when you say his name, so we think he’s stuck with his name and recommend keeping it if you adopt him (the head tilts are EPIC). We think he might have been a vampire in a previous life, as you have to invite him in the house or into rooms; it’s super adorable. Also, he might have been a theater kid at some point because sometimes he only comes when you call him in a sing-song voice, because he’s a drama king. A fun thing he loves to do is when it rains, he likes to lick the rain water off all the other dogs, and himself, after coming back inside. He’ll clean off his feet first, then work on the other dogs like a mother hen; it’s SO CUTE.
We think he would do great with a family with other dogs as he loves to play with other dogs more so than humans. He has been tested with cats and is completely fine with having them hang around. He doesn’t really know how to play with humans, but loves being in on the fun when we play fetch or other games with our dogs, and will sit there and just want attention while we’re playing, and bark along in the fun. He is a great listener and is very food motivated. He sits for all his treats and doesn’t jump up on people unless you invite him. He rides great in the car and can sleep in a crate. We crate trained him when we first got him, but he doesn’t need it as he’s so well behaved when we go out.
Chance recently had surgery for two cancer locations (one in his neck, one in his right front elbow). He’ll need to have a follow up appointment in a few months to see if any cancer has grown back, but the vet is confident they removed all of it and it shouldn’t be a problem in the future. He also had a dental cleaning and removal of a couple teeth, so he’s up to date for dentist appointments.
UPDATE - 3 NOVEMBER 2023: Chance and his foster brother, Bjorn, are best of friends! Chance is such a social guy, and has been a great influence on shy Bjorn. Check out these two videos:
UPDATE - 23 JUNE 2023: We’ve barely had Chance a week and he’s already fitting in with our family so well. He is a happy-go-lucky little dude. He hasn’t stopped wagging his tail since we began fostering him. He’s our little helper boy who loves to follow us around when we’re doing things around the house; he trots along behind us ready to lend a helping hand. He’s curious and playful and overall just living his best life. He doesn’t really know what toys are, but does enjoy a good bone and is always happy to be around the excitement when our other dogs want to play. He walks great on a leash (gets excited about chipmunks and so he’ll pull to go after them, and he’s quite strong), and is happy to meet new people. He gently takes treats and has quickly learned to sit to get more treats. We’re still working on recall but he typically likes to stay near his humans when we go outside. He loves putting his face in your lap for neck rubs and ear scratches. One of his many talents includes almost falling asleep while sitting up. He also loves all his nicknames, Chancy Pants, Chancy Dancy Pants, Sir Chancington Waffle-Iron Buford Esquire, and Chancelot the third.
From what we can tell, he has a moderate energy level, always looking for something fun to do (FOMO) but will settle when everyone else is relaxing. He’s happy to cuddle up on the couch near you, or lay in a bed near you while you work. He has passed crate training with flying colors and will often go into his crate to rest throughout the day. He doesn’t have any separation anxiety that we can tell so far. We think he’d be great with another dog or on his own, he lives in his own world and is having a great time no matter what. Overall, he’s been a wonderful addition to our foster family and we are looking forward to getting to know him more.
UPDATE - 10 JUNE 2023: Great news - Chance is now in a foster home! This boy has been waiting a long time for someone to give him a chance. For an older guy, he is full of life and energy. He is an active boy who is very friendly and had a great time at the Adoption Day today. He is now in a foster home, so we will be learning more about this wonderful boy and how he adjusts to being a pet.
UPDATE - 29 JANUARY 2023: Chance had to be treated for heartworms, but he is now done with the treatment, fully vetted, and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 13 AUGUST 2022: Chance is looking for a second chance! This older guy was a stray who obviously has been neglected for quite some time, so much so that his collar had become embedded in his neck. He’s super sweet and good with other dogs. He was a stray at the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so his history is unknown. He will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
