About Me
Meet Checkers
Status: Living at our private kennel
Estimated Age: 8 Years
Estimated Weight: 26 Pounds
UPDATE - 10 FEBRUARY 2024: Checkers joined us again for an Adoption Day and still didn't find his forever home. He has been living at the kennels for almost a year. He is so sweet and does very well at our Adoption Days. He can be noisy at the kennels, but he was quiet today at the Adoption Day and calmly let us trim his nails, clean his ears, and give him a bath without any complaining. He did well on a leash and didn't let any of the other dogs upset him, even when they got in his face. We still think he would thrive best as an only dog. We hope we can get this boy out of the kennels soon!
UPDATE - 18 MARCH 2023: Unfortunately, Checkers lost his foster home and is now looking for a new one. He might do best as an only dog. He can be selective about his canine buddies. He is a sweet boy, so we hope we can find him a new home soon.
UPDATE - 20 FEBRUARY 2023: Checkers attended our Adoption Day on the 18th and was just as sweet as can be! He enjoyed being around all the people and did great with the other dogs. He is now in a foster home closer to the Washington DC area. Here is a quick update from his new foster family:
Checkers is irresistible so consider yourself warned. If you run your fingers through his babyfine powder puff hair, you will be addicted immediately and then Checkers will lean against your leg; you will be shouting to BREW volunteers to bring you an adoption contract at once! When you pick him up, you will discover that he is as light as feathers, even though he resembles to be a portly gentleman. Checkers appears to be completely housetrained and knows his way around a house handily. He gets along famously with the resident dogs. Checkers loves to go on car rides and keeps up with the more fit dogs easily on a trail hike. He is intensely and instantly loyal, following foster parents around the house and laying at their feet. One night when foster family went out, Checkers stayed in the crate and did so begrudgingly. The next night he was given run of the house when we went out, and he was fine. Checkers is a cute, fun little man who is looking for his furever family.
UPDATE - 1 FEBRUARY 2023: Checkers is hanging out in a foster home with a bunch of other dogs. He is now fully vetted (including a fresh dental!) and available for adoption. Here is what his foster mom has to say about him:
Checkers is very sweet and affectionate. He likes to sleep on the bed and will cuddle with you. He gets along with most other dogs. He's a homebody and would like to just hang out with you, although I'm sure he would enjoy walks too. Checkers is housebroken using a doggie door.
NEW - 7 JANUARY 2023: Checkers came to BREW from another rescue in Richmond, Virginia. Unfortunately, we have no other information about him. He is friendly and good with other dogs. He will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
