About Me
Meet Darryl
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 6-7 Years
Estimated Weight: 32 Pounds
NOTE: Very timid - needs quiet home with no young children.
UPDATE - 8 JUNE 2024: Darryl, who we have had for 2 years, came to our Adoption Day today and spent most of his time huddled against a back wall. He is a very sensitive, timid boy who needs a quiet home. He got a little overwhelmed with the toddler in his previous foster home, so we moved him to a new foster home today. Darryl needs a quiet home with no young children and adults who will give him the time and space he needs to come out of his shell. Other than being afraid of the toddler in his last foster home, Darryl really opened up and was doing much better. We look forward to seeing that happen again in his new foster home and eventual permanent home.
UPDATE - 16 NOVEMBER 2023 (from first foster family): Darryl has made great progress since joining our pack. He was very fearful and really hasn't known too many nice humans in his life. He started out much like a beagle statue... too scared to walk around the house... requiring a human to move him outdoors or to his bed at night. He soon learned that wrestling in the yard with one of his foster siblings is fun and mealtime is super thrilling!! Most recently he learned that babies drop lots of good snacks.. and sometimes their hands are coated in food particles! BONUS!
Don't get me wrong, although Darryl gets some extra surprise snacks, courtesy of a messy baby, he really doesn't care for living with a noisy, unpredictable and mobile baby. His new home should have older kids (if any) who can respect his need for less chaos. Darryl loves his spot on the couch and prefers a bowl of water on the nearby end table. Why should he have to do anything wild and risky like going all the way to the kitchen for a drink like the other beagles here!?!
Darryl likes to do what you tell him. He likes routine and tries to predict what he should do next. If another dog rings the bells on the door, he is right there to accompany them outside. He listens to go to his crate downstairs when we have to leave the house or to his crate upstairs for bedtime. He always goes outside or comes back inside as requested. He is the most obedient beagle in the house right now!
Darryl takes treats gently from your hand and likes a good neck rub. He needs time and patience to continue being used to humans. He isn't totally used to affection from humans, but he will readily snuggle with his foster siblings. He likes toys and bones. He wags his tail for us when he hasn't seen us in a bit. He is gaining a lot of confidence outside hunting yard creatures with 2 of our beagles. He is often first one to start baying as they rush to the backyard together in search of a critter. Darryl also lets us know if the neighbors are doing anything suspicious like going to and from work!
Darryl is sweet, shy and sensitive. We will be working on leash training sometime soon but wanted him to gain a bit more confidence with us around the house. He would like a chill household with another friendly dog to continue to gain confidence. Someone with experience with timid dogs would be helpful so he can continue to blossom!
UPDATE - 28 JUNE 2023: What great news - Darryl is finally in a foster home!!! This shy guy has been waiting for a year, and he finally has a chance to show his true personality. Stay tuned as we learn from his foster family how he does in a home and away from our kennels.
UPDATE - 9 NOVEMBER 2022: Darryl is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 17 JUNE 2022: Darryl is a shy guy who came to BREW from the Tappahannock/Essex County Animal Shelter in Virginia. He was an owner surrender, along with three other dogs, but no information was provided. He’s fearful but can be handled. He would do best with another dog. He tested positive for heartworms when he first came to BREW, but he has now completed his treatment and will be available for fostering or adoption soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
