UPDATE - 24 JUNE 2026: Well, our silly Flip Flop was a little too much for the kitties who lived in the foster home with him (chased them and tried to grab them). Flip Flop is back at the kennels, but we learned a lot about him while he was fostered. His foster family is heartbroken this didn't work out, but this is what they want potential fosters/adopters to know:
Flip was good at getting into his crate at bedtime all by himself and seemed to prefer it for thunderstorms. He enjoys alternating between sunbathing and resting in the shade. He has a deep bark that he used when he joined the others as they curse out the delivery drivers. He is kind of a pokey eater and sometimes had dinner in 2 sessions...there were just too many other fun things to check out. He is an expert snuggler and loves to lean in for hugs.
Flip is very playful but his playmates should be sturdy/like to rough house. He prances around like everyday is the best day ever and I know he will bring someone lots of laughs and love.
UPDATE - 3 JUNE 2026: After celebrating his 3rd birthday at the BREW kennels, Flip Flop has finally found himself a foster home! What great news for this big, silly, wonderful hound boy! Our kennel manager was sad to see him go, but now Flip Flop has a chance to experience life as a pet. He gets to share his home (and sand box) with a young human boy, so that will be fun to see how they do since Flip Flop probably outweighs the little boy by many pounds! Initial reports from the foster family says Flip Flop is settling in well. Here is a fun report from the foster family:
Flip flop is a very silly boy and kind of a thief. He will snatch the most random things and gallop around like a goofy horse....if it fits in his mouth, its fair game. He has been seen prancing around with things like a power drill, my phone, random articles of clothing, our son's sippy cup, and once he tried to pick up a toddler bike by the tire but it was too heavy so he gave up and took a wrench. He doesn't really seem to want to chew the things, he just enjoys jogging a lap with it before he leaves it somewhere else.
He is quite spooked by the cats and tries not to make eye contact with them. Our younger kitten kind of taunts Flip Flop by jumping out of the bushes at him, and then big Flip goes running away from a tiny 8 pound cat.
He settled right down and slept well in his crate. He loves romping around the yard and playing. He has a great time galloping after our son when he's cruising in his power wheels. When he's good and tired out, he sprawls out in the shaded sandbox to cool off.
Bonus for us, Flip Flop's thievery is a great motivation for the kiddo to pick toys up off the floor!
Flip Flop has the best hound lean and loves to gaze at you while you pet his head and under his chin. We're excited to keep getting to know him and know anyone would be lucky to adopt this goofball!
UPDATE – 1 JUNE 2025: Our dear Flip Flop and his brother, Shades, had their 2nd birthday at the kennels. They are big boys, so we know they are hard to place, but we are still holding out hope that someone will be interested in these large, silly, happy boys!
UPDATE – 30 AUGUST 2024: Since their birth about 1.5 years ago, five of our seven Summer Puppies, who are all hound mixes, have been adopted by wonderful families who don’t mind having a larger hound pup in the home. Unfortunately, Flip Flop and Shades, our last two, haven’t had any luck finding a permanent home or even a foster home. They are big boys, so they are more of a challenge to handle, but they are trainable. They have now been living in our kennels for over a year! The good news is they seem happy and are just as silly as can be. They love to romp and play in our kennel yard, but we hate seeing them grow up only knowing kennel life. They will need lots of exercise and training, but we are hoping some family out there will consider taking on one of these very sweet, friendly hounds. Flip Flop says, “Pick me!!!”
UPDATE – 5 NOVEMBER 2023: Our Summer Puppies are turning 6 months old in a few days, and we have only adopted two of the seven. These foxhound mixes are absolutely adorable – big, but super sweet, playful, and social. We would love to see them get into foster or permanent homes soon so they don’t grow up in our kennels.
FROM PREVIOUS SUMMER PUPPY POST (when the “kids” were all posted together):
UPDATE – 12 AUGUST 2023: We finally had our first Summer Puppy adopted! Sunshine went off to her new home today. That leaves 3 females and 3 males left to go. The puppies are so cute and growing up quickly (they are now 3 months old), so we hope to have more adopters or foster homes for them soon!
UPDATE – 29 JULY 2023: The puppies have now had their second puppy shots and are looking for foster or permanent homes. So far, no one has been interested in these gorgeous puppies, and we don’t want them growing up at the kennels. They will grow to be bigger than our average beagles, but foxhounds are beautiful, sweet dogs who will bring tons of joy to adopters looking for their next family pet!
UPDATE – 19 JULY 2023: The puppies are growing quickly and will receive their second set of puppy shots on July 26th. They will then be ready for adoption!
NEW – 29 JUNE 2023: Meet the Summer Puppies! These youngins were born at the Cumberland Animal Shelter in Virginia on May 10th, 2023, and came to BREW a day later. They and their mom (Mata) were desperate for a rescue to take them since there was no room at the shelter or any other rescue. Shelters are full and, like many pregnant mommas ending up at shelters, Momma Foxhound was on the schedule to be euthanized. Fortunately, BREW stepped up and took mom and the 7 hound puppies – 4 girls and 3 boys. They are not beagles, but they fit in well with the beagles at our kennels since they are all hounds! We did a DNA test on one of the puppies, and here are the results: 64.2% American Foxhound; 29.4% Treeing Walker Coonhound; and 6.4% Pointer. Like their mom, these puppies will grow to an estimated weight of 45-50 pounds. We like to call them “tall beagles.” Don’t let their size dissuade you from considering adopting one of these gorgeous puppies!
The Summer Puppies will be ready for adoption after they receive their second set of puppy shots at about 10 weeks (mid-July). If you are interested in adopting one of our Summer Puppies, please fill out an application.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
