About Me
Jellybean
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 3-4 Years
Estimated Weight: 15 Pounds
NOTE: Needs another dog in the home for confidence and companionship.
UPDATE - 14 OCTOBER 2024 (from foster dad): Jellybean has a lot of energy and thrives when there is another dog to play with. We take her to the dog park some days and she has a ball with the other dogs, never seeming to get tired, even after 45-60 minutes straight of running. When alone, she becomes a bit restless and anxious. She is very timid in general and gets anxious with medium to loud sounds. She is loving to humans but still a bit nervous around them, moreso to men, but doesn't bite or growl at anyone, rather tries to keep her distance. She is pretty quiet but will bark on occasion when something has her worked up. When left alone in her crate or pen area, she will bay for awhile before settling down. Her potty training is coming along. She seems to know the outside is where she needs to go but has some accidents in the house, even though we have her out every 2 hours. When she goes in the house, she goes in certain spots so at least it isn't everywhere. On walks she seems to be on a mission to catalogue every scent she comes across. She does well on the leash, doesn't pull or tug, but has her nose to the ground 90% of the time. At night she either sleeps in the bed with me or in the dog bed next to the bed. She likes the security of sleeping against someone (human or dog) and typically sleeps through the night.
Overall she is such a sweet girl with so much energy. I think the ideal home would be someone with another dog or two, and who can facilitate her release of energy (yard to runaround, a couple walks, dog park). She needs a caring family who will give her positive attention given her anxiety, where she will feel safe, and someone who is patient as she continues the transition to home life.
UPDATE - 14 SEPTEMBER 2024: Jellybean took a little detour for a month with a potential adopting family, but her energy level and possible need to have another dog in the home brought her back to us for a second chance at adoption. She came to today's Adoption Day and was able to find a foster home right away, so that is good news! This home has other dogs, so let's see how she does living in a home with both human and doggie companionship.
UPDATE - 7 JULY 2024: Jellybean is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 10 JUNE 2024: Jellybean is little beagle mix girl who has an old eye injury that doesn’t affect her vision. She’s a little on the shy side - hard to tell what the little girl has been through. She was a stray at the Cumberland Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown. She probably needs a quieter home with humans who will give her plenty of time to gain some confidence. Jellybean will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
