About Me
Meet Kalisa
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 8 Years
Estimated Weight: 24 Pounds
NOTE: Has diabetes insipidus - controlled with medication applied through eye drops. Would do best in a quiet home with no young children.
UPDATE - 8 JUNE 2022: Kalisa is amazingly strong and active for a mature dog. She's apt to get excited and run up/down stairs and around the house - usually when one of us has been away & comes back. She has a sweet nature & loves belly rubs (see photo). Although she doesn't approach for snuggles she visibly relaxes when she's being held and cuddled. She has overcome her original apprehension of strangers, checks out visitors and has decided foster mom is almost as good for company as foster dad.
UPDATE - 24 MARCH 2022: Kalisa loves the outdoors, happily runs around sniffing and goes on sit-down strike when she has to come in. A fenced-in yard or willingness to keep up with her on a leash in the yard would be best at home. She does well on a leash when walking, but she expects the person on the other end to go as fast as she wants to (harness recommended). She also likes to be able to look outside when she’s in. Kalisa is a good traveler and always wants to go along in the car. She is sweet and not aggressive, but she can be timid and is still easily startled by quick movements or loud/strange noises. We're still working on some house manners and health issues, which are improving. She will do best with a quiet family that has no young, active children. She also prefers the company of her male human over the female :)
UPDATE - 5 FEBRUARY 2022 (from foster family): Kalisa is a sweet, timid little girl, loves to be with "her people,” is learning "come" & “no," and seems to understand the reason we take her outdoors; so far no indoor accidents. For the first week she was very sedentary but an online video of beagles hunting had her barking and chasing around the house looking for them. She can’t figure out how that tiny screen makes so much noise. Check out this video! Kalisa meets barking dogs. Sweet!
UPDATE - 29 JANUARY 2022: Sweet Kalisa went off to a foster home today. This poor girl has had a hard life, and she now gets to enjoy life in a warm house! Stay tuned for updates from her foster mom and dad.
NEW - 25 JANUARY 2022: Kalisa is an older girl who is friendly, submissive, and good with other dogs. She came to BREW as a stray from the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown. She is fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
