About Me
Meet Liam
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 2 Years
Estimated Weight: 19 Pounds
NOTE: Would do best living with another dog for company. Needs a fenced yard.
UPDATE - 7 JUNE 2022: LIAM HAS OFFICIALLY GONE PANTSLESS! He has been doing great with house training! No marking for many weeks-- honestly not even sure how long now. We quit using the bellyband because he has been dry for weeks. He rings the bell to go outside! What a good boy! We are so proud of him. Aside from being a rockstar at housetraining, Liam is up to his usual shenanigans. He is playing with his foster siblings and has had fun play dates with some visiting dogs too! He has the cutest slither mixed with slapping his paws when he's asking one of the others to play with him.
He has the routine totally down pat and does what you tell him.
Liam has a new fun game where the human gathers a pile of toys and tosses one at a time. Liam will run and snatch it up and then off he goes to make a stockpile. See photo of Liam surrounded by toys. He also likes to hide his favorite toy outside under grass clippings... then he can play with it whenever he wants!
Liam has been showing a lot more affection to us and is an all around sweet dog. Whoever adopts Liam will be lucky to get to know him.
UPDATE - 27 APRIL 2022: Liam is really enjoying attention now! He is most brave and sweet first thing in the morning. He likes to jump up on the bed, get pets and be told how handsome he is. Liam has really come a long way. He is even stopping for pets on his way out the door from our midday dog sitter. He is interested in new people when they come over and is doing better on the leash. Liam has the routine down pat and recently conquered going down the stairs all by himself! He is a silly little cookie monster who has made so much progress! Liam is looking for a home where he will be allowed to continue to blossom on his terms. We think he's worth it.
UPDATE - 20 MARCH 2022: Liam is coming along here. He is getting more comfortable with us and gives such sweet and happy greetings. He now regularly gives kisses to say hello. He is still a little unsure of receiving affection outside of hello greetings but seems less unsure about it than a month ago. He has the routine down. When he wants to go outside he runs to the back door and stares at it or sometimes rings the bells. When you go to let him out he assumes a squat position and waits for his belly band to be removed. Its pretty cute when he does that. He is very playful and loves to be outside. A house with a yard is probably a must for him because he really doesn't love the leash yet plus he loves the freedom. When he wants to come inside he sits at the back door and barks for you. Check out this cute video of Liam in the back yard with his buddy Tan, who likes to steal Liam's toys! Liam and Tan
Liam's adopter would have to understand that bonding with him will take time. That first time he greets you after you have been gone will melt your heart. Liam would be a fun companion for someone's playful dog. You wouldn't have to worry about your current dog being jealous of all the attention Liam would steal because he doesn't really want to be fussed over anyway! We don't know what Liam went through when he lived in a rabbit hutch, but I can tell you he is a tough, silly, playful and downright chipper little fellow.
UPDATE - 13 FEBRUARY 2022: Liam is an early riser! He sleeps quietly all night but then come 530 or 6, he is ready to go pee, have breakfast, wrestle with one of our resident dogs, then take a nap...in that order. He is getting better about going into the crate on his own - he just needed to get the hang of the routine. He is marking less and less, but we do still keep the belly band on since he is still learning.
Liam has quickly learned all the good stuff happens in the kitchen. He will spy on you if you're getting a snack. Liam loves to be out in the yard, roaming, sniffing and making announcements for any fun sights or smells. He stays out for hours when the weather isn't freezing... and doesn't seem too bothered by rain!
Liam still doesn't understand affection from humans. He comes charging up, tail wagging to say hello when we come home from work or first thing in the morning--but he's fine to just share his excitement from a few feet away before he goes back to whatever he was doing! I think Liam will get there, so we are patient with him. His new family will need to understand that Liam is a sweet and happy boy who just needs time to adjust and learn to trust you.
UPDATE - 30 JANUARY 2022 (from foster family): Liam has been with us for a week now. He was quite shy at first but after 2 days he started greeting us with excitement. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night and loves to romp around with foster bro Tan. Liam has never lived in a house before, so he was delighted to discover the most comfy spot in the house-- the back of the couch. He can pretend he is a tough guard dog and watch out the window or he can take a nap when there is not much activity to keep track of outside.
We keep a belly band on him because he is still learning that he should not mark inside. When caught trying to do this, he stops right away with a verbal correction. He has not pooped in the house and he does ask to go outside but usually its just to be nosy about what the neighbor dogs are doing or to play chase with Tan.
Liam is very cute, curious and puppylike. He likes to check everything out and wants to play with all of his foster siblings-- even the really grouchy one that always rudely says NO. Once the ice and snow calms down we will practice going on walks. He has never been on a leash before. Liam should probably live with another dog. We are unsure if he would mind living with kids just yet as he is still showing more and more of his personality the longer he is here.
UPDATE - 22 JANUARY 2022: Little Liam is now in a foster home! He is very shy, so this will be a wonderful opportunity watch this little boy come out of his shell. Stay tuned!
UPDATE - 29 OCTOBER 2021: Liam is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 7 OCTOBER 2021: Liam is a small beagle boy who came in with Lucas. Liam is a little more on the shy side than Lucas. They were an owner surrender to the Madison County Animal Shelter in Virginia because the owner was no longer able to hunt. Unfortunately, the boys weren't socialized and spent most of their lives in a rabbit hutch. Liam will need lots of patience and TLC. He will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
