About Me
Meet Matina
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 6-7 Years (acts like a 3-year-old!)
Estimated Weight: 15 Pounds
UPDATE - 9 SEPTEMBER 2023: We can't believe this cutie still hasn't found her forever home! She can get a little grumpy when other dogs get in her space while on a leash, but she is adorable and would love to be spoiled as an only dog! Let's find this little girl a home!
UPDATE - 7 AUGUST 2023: Matina loves to go on walks and meet everybody she sees: dogs & people of all ages! She's great with kids and loves attention, but will also play with toys by herself (very adorable to watch!) She has been very good at playing with other dogs that will play with her, and mostly ignore the ones who don't want to play. She is too short to be a counter surfer but loves to get on the bed for naps. Matina is house-trained.
UPDATE - 19 JUNE 2023: Matina is a very fun girl! We’ve had a chihuahua house guest this past week, and she has been having a blast playing and running around with someone smaller than her! She has been good about sharing her toys with the chihuahua, and has turned into a bit of a tease when it comes to running around with her new friend! Her latest game is to grab a toy and entice the chihuahua to chase her around the yard all while making gremlin noises!
Matina has also become an artist! We had a Beagle Paint Party, and Matina got to paint canvases with our resident beagle crew. She’s very good at it, and very politely worked together with the others to make sure all the canvases were painted. Here is a great video of Matina and her buddies painting together: Matina at a Painting Party
Earlier this week, Matina helped make homemade doggy ice cream. She helped by taste testing the pumpkin, and of course had to make sure the first batch meet quality control!)
UPDATE - 6 JUNE 2023 (from foster family): Little Matina has really progressed from the shy timid Beagle she was when we picked her up at the March 18 adoption day. She's blossomed into a very happy, high energy girl that loves walks, people, food, playing with her house mates (when they choose to cooperate) and even plays with toys to keep herself entertained, which also entertains us!
She loves walks and will let you know very verbally that you’re not going fast enough when getting the leashes out for the pack. Once out on their walk she will do her business then tends to get into other pups business when they are relieving themselves. If you have other dogs, be aware of what she’s up to or she might get pee’d on while checking out everyone! In addition, she does have the bad habit of going after poop, whether it’s hers or from someone else.
Matina has been house trained using a doggie door to go out to do her business. If you don’t have a doggy door, you’ll need to work with her to see what her “tell” is that she needs to go.
As her pictures show, she is black, with tan points, with the last 3-4 inches of her tail being dapple. She’s a wonderful mash-up of Dachshund and Beagle. Her coat is like that of a Dachshund which doesn’t shed heavily like a Beagle.
Matina is very sweet and affectionate and will give your hands and legs kissy licks. Since being with us, she has no personal space boundaries. Like a Beagle, her nose leads her everywhere, from onto your lap to stealing your side of the bed! (She likes to sleep with us!)
She’s very brave and curious and tries to get everywhere, causing us to place barriers on our stair railing. She’s fearless in her investigations with a recent accomplishment of walking the 6 inch railing on our above ground pool! Check out this video: Matina at the Pool
UPDATE - 18 MARCH 2023: Matina had fun at the Adoption Day today and was able to find a foster home! Stay tuned as we learn more about this little girl.
UPDATE - 25 FEBRUARY 2023: Little Matina is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 5 FEBRUARY 2023: Matina is a tiny beagle girl who is active, friendly, social and gets along well with other dogs. She was a stray at the Fluvanna County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown. She will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
