About Me
Meet Michael
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 8-9 Years
Estimated Weight: 25 Pounds
NOTE: No young children.
UPDATE - 13 FEBRUARY 2022 (from foster mom): Even though he is a little older, Michael has a lot of pep. We went on a 5 mile hike today, and he loved it. Michael will go to the door and bark when he needs to go out. We occasionally need to watch him for marking, but we are working on that.
Michael is a friendly, happy boy, but he can be reactive on a leash when he sees another dog. Fortunately, he’s small and easy to control, but we do need to watch him when we get near other dogs while on a walk. I’ve been working on ‘leave it’ with him when we pass another dog out walking. Michael is fine at at home with our resident beagle when he is not on a leash. We live in an apartment complex where there are lots of dogs being walked, so he may just need a home where his walking route is less crowded.
NEW - 28 JANUARY 2022 (from foster mom): What can I tell you about Michael? He’s the dog you need to get through these winter months and beyond.
Not feeling great? Want to curl up and read on a cold winter’s day? He’s all about being right next to you and making sure you are feeling okay.
Need a bit of exercise? He’s great on the leash (no tugging!) and knows that he needs to do his business when you are outside.
Tired after a long day at work? He is 100% beagle (maybe a smidge Jack Russell?) and 100% couch potato. [Yes, that’s 200% but he doesn’t care about math!] And he won’t even argue about what to watch… RuPaul’s Drag Race? Yellowstone? All Creatures Great and Small? Doesn’t matter! He just wants to share your interests. He hasn’t watched professional sports yet but hears there are good snacks involved so is totally into that. He draws the line at The Squid Game, though; much too violent and stressful. Who needs that?!
Michael has been with us for a little over a week and he is delightful. Compact, sweet, and low key. In his former life he was for sure someone’s cherished pet because he spent a few days expecting table craps (from us, the dishwasher, the refrigerator) but eventually realized we are a kibble-only household and has adjusted. And we bought him a dog bed because he likes to curl up and snooze all day. We don’t have a fenced in yard so have been taking him for walks every day. He’s housebroken and will go the door when he needs to go out.
His paperwork indicates he’s older but he acts very young and has a lot of energy and curiosity. He loves kids (mine are aged 11 and 17) and gets on well with our resident beagle (an older BREW alumnus). He enjoys long walks and snuggling. He does get a bit insecure on the leash when he meets new dogs (stranger danger) but that can be resolved with patience, time, and training (he’s very food motivated). He has learned ‘sit’ and is working on ‘down’ and ‘stay.’
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
