Rivers – Adopted February 2021

Rivers – Adopted February 2021

About Me

Meet Rivers
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 2-3 Years
Estimated Weight: 45 Pounds

NOTE: No young children.

UPDATE – 7 FEBRUARY 2021: Rivers has been in his foster home for a few months while he recovered from a gunshot wound and was evaluated for a variety of surgeries. He is a survivor, and his foster mom thinks he is now ready for adoption. Here is what she has to say about him:

Rivers is still learning to trust people. I really can’t blame him – he has had a tough time in his short life. He was hit by a car – injuring his pelvis – and then was shot in the leg. Rivers visited our orthopedic surgeon who didn’t see a need for any surgery. He will need to be maintained on glucosamine throughout his life and may be at risk for early arthritis or injury if he over compensates for the healed pelvic injury. But the injury is not stopping him from enjoying life and he still likes to run in the yard with the other dogs, and going for walks will be good for him. His bullet wound has also healed. Rivers is all set to go to his forever home!

Rivers still loves to cuddle and spends evenings hanging out with me and generally a couple of other dogs in my oversize chair. Workdays will find him snuggling in a dog bed with the other dogs. He is house trained and not a barker. Sometimes it seems that he needs to get away from it all and he will go into his “nook” in the bedroom to take a nap. At meal time, Rivers doesn’t like to be watched while he is eating.

NEW – 29 NOVEMBER 2020: Rivers is loving being in his foster home and we’re loving having him. He came to BREW with a wound in his hind leg from being shot for showing interest in an in-heat female. His open wound has healed but he still has a limp. Does it slow him down? No! One of his favorite playmates is 20 pound resident dog Ruby. He even gets along with the resident cats. Due to his injured leg he couldn’t jump up on the sofa or bed. He learned to climb up on the chair and, this morning, he finally succeeded in getting onto the bed. He is a tall boy, so height worked in his favor – now it seems to be the favorite nap spot. In the evenings he likes to nap on the chair with me (I have a big chair!). Rivers is a sweet and gentle boy but still has a lot of puppy in him; with his size he is most suited to a home without young children.

Note that Rivers is a hound. We were told he was 24 pounds. Imagine my surprise when the transport brought him to me. While not 24 pounds, Rivers is still too skinny at 40 pounds. We are working on putting some weight on him. Rivers still has some vetting to get done, so he will be available in late December.

Q:  Can you tell me more about a specific dog?  Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?

A:  What we know is in the write up.  Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited.  Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.

Q:  Can I meet a specific dog?

A:  We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs.  Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.

Q:  How can I adopt a specific dog?

A:  You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt.  You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there..  It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you.  Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime.  But we are always getting new dogs.   You can see them on our website.

Q:  Can I add another dog to the list on my application?

A:  We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application.  It gives us an idea of what you are looking for.  Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.

Q:  I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted.  What happened?

A:  We do not hold dogs.  Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved.  But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
