About Me
Meet Rookie
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 2-3 Years
Estimated Weight: 25 Pounds
UPDATE - 28 JANUARY 2024: Rookie found a foster home at our last adoption event and is enjoying testing out what life is like living in a house. Here is an initial report from his new foster family:
(Colonel) Rookie has now been with us for about 2 weeks. He settled in VERY quickly for a young dog that lived in the kennels for over a year. Rookie is a really quiet beagle mix, standing taller than most beagles but weighing only around 25 lbs. He has done extremely well with house training, enjoys napping on his dog bed, LOVES walks (really more like a jog), and despite being only 2-3 years old is very chill. Rookie spent the first two nights sleeping in his crate, but quickly let us know that he preferred to be closer to us and has spent the rest of the nights sleeping at the foot of our bed. Although he is lanky, he curls up into a little ball and doesn't squirm or snore! He is a happy social dog who has done well with our 4 young children but does set some boundaries regarding his space. Rookie's ideal family would be active and affectionate as he LOVES to receive pets and give kisses! We're not sure how he would do with toddlers. This super sweet boy has a long life ahead of him!

UPDATE - 12 AUGUST 2023: Rookie has been living at our kennels since December 2022 and finally joined us for an adoption event today. He has gorgeous coloring and loved all the attention at the event! Many of us met him for the first time and were impressed with his happy personality. He has been overlooked for too long! We hope we can find this boy a foster home or forever home soon!
UPDATE - 31 JANUARY 2023: Rookie is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 22 DECEMBER 2022: Rookie is a beagle boy who may be new to getting regular meals, doggie cookies, and human attention. He needs to put on some weight. He’s adjusting well and is friendly and good with other dogs. He was a stray at Madison County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so his history is unknown. He will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
