About Me
Sugarplum
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 3 Years (Est DOB 12/17/22)
Estimated Weight: 20-21 Pounds
UPDATE - 8 MARCH 2026 (from foster family): We have now had Sugarplum for 3 weeks, and she has really settled in! Although she is estimated to be around 3 years old, her puppy side is still very strong, and she keeps us smiling with her playful, happy energy.
House training is going well. We have a doggie door that she uses regularly, along with her three walks a day, and she has been doing extremely well following the lead of the other dog in the house, which has helped her quickly learn the routine.
We did lose the battle with crating at night, but we have to admit we love the way she snuggles up next to us and sleeps so soundly through the night. It’s clear she feels safe and comfortable here, and it has been wonderful watching her personality shine more each day.
Sugarplum is EXTREMELY food motivated, which has actually made training fun and rewarding. We are working on waiting and general house manners. Although she doesn’t weigh much and is quite dainty, she is tall enough to occasionally try a little counter surfing—so we joke that nothing left on the counter is truly safe!
Sugarplum would likely thrive in a lively home, especially with another dog to play with. She absolutely enjoys having a canine companion and does a great job taking cues from the other dog in the house. We are also helping her get comfortable with short periods of daytime crating alongside the other dog so that when she does need to be left unsupervised, she feels relaxed and secure.
Overall, Sugarplum is a total lovebug with so much affection to give. She loves being close to her people and will make a wonderful, devoted companion for a lucky family.
UPDATE - 18 FEBRUARY 2026 (initial report from foster mom): Sugarplum found herself a quick foster home after showing off her sweet personality at adoption day. This dainty little girl has settled into home life quickly. She has been a real potty star, using the doggy door and stairs to do her business in the backyard and also enjoying her leash walks! She is gentle enough that even my children can walk her with ease.
Sugarplum is a total snuggle bug. She looooves to be right up next to you on the couch or in your lap while you are working. She reluctantly sleeps in her crate, but would probably prefer to be in the bed (we have another foster who has already claimed that space and doesn't want to share!)
True to her beagle self, she looooooooooooooves all food; Based on her size and desire , we suspect that she didn't always have access to enough of it. Feeding her with a slow feeder bowl and offering her a lunch time snack will hopefully help.
UPDATE - 14 FEBRUARY 2026: What an adorable girl! Sugarplum came to our Adoption Day today and showed everyone that she is about as sweet as they come. Sugarplum went off to a foster home today, so let's see how she adjusts to living in a home for the first time.
NEW - 17 JANUARY 2026: Sugarplum is a beagle mix who lived on a chain and was seized by Animal Control in Louisa County, Virginia. She is super sweet, friendly and good with other dogs. She is available for fostering or adoption. Come meet her at the February 14th Adoption Day!
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
