About Me
Meet Susie
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 1.5-2 Years
Estimated Weight: 19 Pounds
NOTE: Can be timid in noisy/new environments.
UPDATE - 11 JANUARY 2022: Come meet Susie at our Adoption Day (see Events) on 1/15 in Springfield, VA. Her foster parents say she is crate trained, house trained, very playful and loves toys, and loves belly rubs. She is food motivated, takes treats gently, and lets you pet her paws. She sounds like a herd of horses when she does zoomies around the house! She can be bashful in new environments, but this girl will come out of her shell once she feels comfortable in her new home!
UPDATE - 1 JANUARY 2022: This girl is making great progress! Since the last posting, she is getting along better with the resident beagles, actually friendly with them! She goes crazy for peanut butter! I spread it on the bathtub as a distraction during a bath and she practically jumped in! Susie loves getting belly rubs when released from her crate, and this afternoon came to me for a rub! She’s still very skittish but getting better about it. She is also more playful with toys, humans, & dogs! She loves walks and doesn’t pull as much as she used to. Susie is turning into a happy girl who will be a great companion for someone soon! We do recommend that you come visit us. Susie can be unpredictable, skittish, curious, & inquisitive. Probably just insecure. We’d love to have visitors to help us learn more about her and get her used to strangers.
UPDATE - 3 DECEMBER 2021 (from foster mom): Susie has been showing us her fun side lately: playing with toys, zooming around the yard, and going for long walks! She’s still an alpha girl. She bullies our resident dogs when excited, but she has no aggression towards people, at least women. She still barks at men. I recently gave her a bath and had no problems with her. She was so funny & playful when finished! Susie seems to like to wear clothes and behaves a bit better when dressed! She sleeps in her crate at night with no issues, no whining. She eats nicely - no fighting. She is gentle when taking treats from a hand and also when taking medicine wrapped in ham!
Susie is really a fun girl, but she needs time and attention because she is still timid about people and bullish at times with other dogs. We don’t know how she is with cats.
UPDATE - 17 NOVEMBER 2021: Susie is making progress in her foster home. She is beginning to trust other people, especially women. She does bay and bark at men, though she eventually settles down, especially if offered a treat.
Susie is still a puppy and has that high puppy energy. She loves playing with toys and will chase balls and toss them in the air to play with (she is a beagle, so she hasn't figured out how to bring the ball back). She learns quickly, and when walked on her own she listens well while on leash. As an older puppy, she is testing her limits and needs to be corrected about what is and isn't okay to chew on.
Susie loves playing and being with the other dogs, but she is showing signs that she wants to be the boss. She’s had a couple of scrapes with all of our resident dogs, and now that she’s figured out which one is the current boss, Susie has let her know there’s a new challenger. For the most part, the other dogs are now wary of interactions with her, even though Susie still tries to engage them in playing and cuddling. We’ve started crating Susie at night and when she can’t be supervised. Good news - Susie is crate trained! She is quiet in the crate, and keeps it clean throughout the night. We have not yet crated her for long periods of time during the day, but she has done well for an hour or two at a time.
I think that with time, training, and patience, Susie can overcome her fear of men and strangers. She may do well as an only dog or with a submissive companion.
UPDATE - 4 NOVEMBER 2021: Hi, Susie here! I love my foster family. They have been very patient with me since I’m so scared & skittish of grown ups (kids are interesting, dogs are better). I’m close to one human here - I sleep with her at night, and she gives me treats! The other two are still scary most of the time.
I love to play, go for walks, & eat (I’m really just a big puppy!) I get along fine with the resident dogs, especially the chihuahua since he has as much energy as I do! We’re also sweater buddies. I love to get dressed up! I’ve been a good girl and haven't had any accidents inside since I learned how to use the doggie door!
NEW - 24 SEPTEMBER 2021: Susie was given up by her owner when no one could take care of her. She came from a hunting background and has one cropped ear. Susie is shy and sweet and needs a home that is quiet. Her new owners will need to be very patient and gentle with her as she adjusts to all the changes in her life. Susie will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
