NEW - 28 MARCH 2022: Although we would love to see Tatiana and Trinity adopted as a pair, we think each of the girls would do okay apart as long as they went to homes with other dogs for company and owners with some experience with timid beagles. Here is an update on Tatiana from her foster family:
Tatiana is a sweet and shy beagle who loves a comfy bed and a good meal. She also enjoys instigating playtime with other dogs, especially bonded sister, Trinity. She is very wary of anything she has not experienced before including humans, some inanimate objects, and unfamiliar noises. Once Tatiana opens up and is more comfortable in her surroundings and with her humans, she is playful, enjoys chewing dog toys, and will smirk and wiggle her little butt as fast as she is able to show her love for you.
She is a young beagle with energy to spare and will not pass up an opportunity to chase her sister around the back yard! Walks are challenging, and Tatiana still does not freely enjoy her time on a leash, but does follow along when on the walk, but without her tail up or even wagging. She has become familiar with the idea of walks and the walking routes, and is patient enough to wait to be harnessed and sit by the front door for her leash. Tatiana’s favorite activity is to curl up at the end of the couch while you watch tv and second favorite activity is to curl up next to you on the couch while you stream your favorite programs. Tatiana is potty trained but may have an accident or two in the house initially. She is very good about going to the bathroom almost immediately after getting outside and then spends some time exploring the yard and assisting her sister in alerting you of (barking at) passers-by (humans, dogs, cars).
During her first two months with us, she was extremely fearful and “hid” at the end of the couch, under the bed, or in the corner of the kitchen. We had to leash her during that time to take her outside and kept her leashed until she went to the bathroom because she was too scared to come back inside on her own (scared of us). If we had left her unleashed outside during this period, she would find a place to hide in a safe corner of the yard. Tatiana’s adopters must be very vigilant with her because she is still very fearful, and be patient as she slowly works her way out of her shell and into her natural self.
Tatiana will make a great pet and will be even better with another dog in the household; preferably adopted with her sister, Trinity. We recommend beagle experienced and patient adopters as it will take some time (perhaps a month or two) for Tatiana to fully open up, transition, and become comfortable in her new environment and with her new humans. Once comfortable, Tatiana is an adventurous and cute little girl who will love her human unconditionally and will definitely show it with the cutest and almost exaggerated butt wiggles. She will also take the opportunity, if provided, to assist the sun in waking you up in the morning by jumping up into the bed, climbing on top of you, and wiggling uncontrollably as she attempts to lick your fingers and hands. Given enough time, love, patience, and cookies (treats), Tatiana will become your special little girl and steal your heart.
Tatiana has not been around cats or children while under our care, although she seems a little prey driven and may go after cats, hamsters, etc, who live in the home.
(ORIGINAL POST AS A BONDED PAIR WITH TRINITY):
UPDATE - 11 DECEMBER 2021: These shy girls are now in a foster home where they are learning how to not be afraid of humans. We are looking forward to watching these girls come out of their shells. Stay tuned!
NEW - 31 OCTOBER 2021: Tatiana and Trinity came to BREW from the Abington Animal Shelter in Virginia when their owner could no longer care for them. We think they are sisters. We don't know much about their background, but they seem to walk well on a leash. Both girls are shy and need some extra patience and a quiet home where they can adjust to their new situation with minimal stress. They are available for fostering and adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
