About Me
Meet Tonks
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 3-4 Years
Estimated Weight: 26 Pounds
UPDATE - 7 JUNE 2022: Tonks is rapidly learning all about living in a house, while teaching her foster family a thing or two. When she wants to go out to potty, Tonks taps her foster mom on the shoulder.
Foster mom: Go away. I'm eating.
Tonks: I mean it. I have to go NOW!
Tonks continues to tap, bat, and punch until Foster mom takes her out and Tonks immediately goes pee and poop in the front yard. She has taught her foster mom to be patient and favors her with all her requests, ignoring foster dad. Tonks gets nervous on solo walks around the neighborhood, with particular dislike for the neighbor dogs who come barreling up to the fence to bark at her. She still adores a good hike in the woods though and could spend a lifetime sniffing one spot only, until the rest of the pack tears her away. Tonks likes good belly rubs from her foster dad and cuddles with mom. She might be the ideal dog for apartment or condo living as she rarely barks, and is usually quiet. She adores people, both little ones and grown ups.
UPDATE - 18 MAY 2022 (first impressions from foster family): What a shy little lady Tonks is! Since joining her foster home, she has spent much of her time peering out from the open crate but every day Tonks is becoming more and more adventurous. She loves her foster brothers and bounds up the stairs behind them. She tends to be a follower and gains courage by the presence of another dog. Tonks is also very pro-people who loves to cuddle. Four days in to her foster experience, no potty accidents in the house! Also, no barking despite high interest in squirrels in the yard. Tonks enjoys hiking in the woods and rides in the car.
UPDATE - 14 MAY 2022: Tonks joined us for her second Adoption Day today. She still hasn't found her forever family, but she did find a foster home. More soon!
UPDATE - 4 APRIL 2022: Tonks has completed her heartworm treatment and is now available for fostering or adoption.
UPDATE - 20 JANUARY 2022: Tonks tested positive for heartworms, so she will need to go through heartworm treatment before being available for adoption.
NEW - 27 DECEMBER 2021: Tonks is a beagle girl who is a little uncertain at the moment. She does well with people but can be overwhelmed by all the other dogs at the kennels. She and Tova, who we think may be related and definitely know each other, were strays at the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia. Their history is unknown. Tonks will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
