About Me
Meet Tubbs
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 7-8 Years
Estimated Weight: 37 Pounds
UPDATE - 4 APRIL 2023 (from foster family): Tubbs is like a soft, squishy, oversized puppy. He seems happy; full of enthusiasm and mischief; very sweet & entertaining in his creativity. Picked up, he is like a furry water balloon, totally limp. He just wants love and attention and is content to sit close or lean into me or follow me around the yard. He would be great for someone looking for a lovable, low key companion…(unless his inner beagle has yet to emerge).
He took a week to familiarize himself with the comforts of home but seems to have the basic rules down (not rowdy, don't chew furniture, potty) but not basic commands like ‘sit’, etc. He has learned to use a doggie door - not the smaller, double flap door my beagle, Charlie, uses but one that a piece of plexiglass in the storm door (he promptly bit a corner off of it), so Tubbs still needs to have the main door opened for him. We are working on communication to let me know when he needs to ‘go’. For now, I just keep a close eye on him. He did have an accident and one ‘near miss’ in the first few days so I don’t completely trust that he is housebroken. I have not seen him mark in or outside.
Tubbs goes in his crate at will during the day for a nap (or in Charlie's crate, as they are both kept open). He sleeps all night. Around 6:30 am he starts making ‘I’m awake’ noises—but nothing that demands ‘’let me out, now!”. He goes directly outside to do business. He sleeps in the car and is OK on a leash (though could use some work, or maybe more time to settle down).
Tubbs has been dealing with an ear infection like a trooper. He will squirm and whine during treatment but does not act out beyond that. He is getting used to pats on the head, otherwise seems to think an extended hand is only a treat dispenser (or bait for capture?). He is very gentle taking treats.
Tubbs had trouble learning stairs; resists getting paws on wet grass; picks unusual places to take a nap (yard waste container) or hide treats—(see pic of Tubbs in my lazy Susan cabinet-his white tail is to the left; (so far) he climbs rather than digs—onto my potting table and my riding mower, both (I now know) too close to the fence! He likes to look at his reflection in glass and wag.
Though interested at first, he does not play with toys and will only watch as I throw and retrieve, squeak, roll and otherwise make a fool of myself trying to engage him (with every type, texture, treat filled option). He has fun with cardboard boxes (empty or not), shoes, rugs, iPad cover, etc., anything other than a toy. The damage has been minimal, so it seems more like attention getting… but he enjoys pulling throw rugs around and shoes, even dragging them outside. A loud ‘no’ and he will obediently drop what ever he is not supposed to have…and wag shamelessly.
Tubbs and my beagle, Charlie, have been keeping their distance (Charlie was dominated by my female but has played well with other dogs). He has not warmed up to Tubbs…yet. Generally, Tubbs’ has not been aggressive, but he is clumsy, and his enthusiasm causes an issue when he knocks or pushes into Charlie’s space.
UPDATE - 18 MARCH 2023: Tubbs had a great time at the Adoption Day today and found himself a foster home! We will be hearing more about this big, happy boy soon!
NEW - 4 FEBRUARY 2023: Tubbs is a chunky beagle boy who is a happy fellow. He’s social, playful and good with other dogs. He was a stray at Amelia Animal Shelter In Virginia, so his history is unknown. He is fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
