About Me
Meet Alena
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 1-2 Years
Estimated Weight: 30 Pounds
NOTE: Needs another dog in the home.
UPDATE - 26 NOVEMBER 2021: Alena is doing great! She has started asking to go outside by swatting at the bells on the door. She loves when new people come over and will even greet them with a kiss. She is snuggling up against us on the couch more often and has an adorable happy leaping dance when it's time to eat. She takes treats very gently but does try to steal from the others. Alena likes to say good morning to each human before going outside for the first time each day. What a sweet girl!
UPDATE - 4 NOVEMBER 2021: Alena is an extremely sweet, gentle girl who is a little bit skittish more than she is shy. She gets spooked sometimes by your movements or loud things, but she is very much interested in people and knowing everything that is going on. For the first several days she was here, she followed the humans EVERYWHERE but we couldn't get close enough to touch her. We just let her do her thing with the other dogs and it worked out just fine. After about 5 days here she started getting interested enough in affection to let us pet her and she even started giving kisses. Now when she follows us everywhere we can stop and give her some pets and she seems to appreciate it.
She would probably not do well in a loud and busy household, or one where they run the vacuum everyday (ha!). Alena seeks out comfort from the other dogs or goes into her crate if she is scared. She sleeps through the night just fine in her crate and goes into it pretty easily when you want her to. Alena is VERY food motivated and slightly taller than your average beagle.... keep things pushed back from the counter's edge because this girl can reach it. In fact, last night she took a lick of my potato soup that I left sitting too close to the edge. When I turned around, she had splatters of it all over her face from the ricochet of the super fast lick she stole. It was pretty funny honestly, but I won't make that mistake again!
Alena loves to play chase, wrestle and snuggle with the other dogs. She definitely needs a fun furry friend at her new house. She was immediately prancing and play bowing the second she saw our pack. She is interested in the cats but doing okay mostly leaving them alone. She likes to go on walks but does get a bit spooked when a large car goes by on our small gravel road so a very loud busy street might be tough for her to walk.
She needs a home with a friendly, playful dog and humans that understand she will prefer a little space and patience while she gets used to her new surroundings. We think she is worth it!
UPDATE - 23 OCTOBER 2021: We found a foster home for Alena. She is a little shy, but she is doing well, so far. Stay tuned as we learn more about this young girl.
NEW - 19 AUGUST 2021: Alena is a pretty young beagle with a dash of hound. She’s slightly taller than your average beagle. She’s a little shy of people but loves to play and is great with other dogs. She would do best in a home with another dog. She was a stray at the Amelia County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown. She will be available soon.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
