NEW - 28 MARCH 2022: Although we would love to see Trinity and Tatiana adopted as a pair, we think each of the girls would do okay apart as long as they went to homes with other dogs for company and owners with some experience with timid beagles. Here is an update on Trinity from her foster family:
Trinity is a sweet little beagle who loves other dogs, especially her bonded sister, Tatiana, but she is very wary of anything she has not experienced before including humans, some inanimate objects, and unfamiliar noises. Once Trinity opens up and is more comfortable in her surroundings and with her humans, she is very playful and loves licking faces, receiving treats, wrestling with her sister, and playing with and burying dog toys (and sometimes socks and other small articles of clothing).
She is a young beagle with a lot of energy, and definitely needs creative and appropriate ways to expel that energy such as walks and food puzzles! Walks can be challenging at first, but once she becomes familiar with the idea of walks and the walking routes, she really enjoys it and is even patient enough to wait to be harnessed and sit by the front door for her leash. When not being rambunctious, she wants nothing more than to curl up in her favorite dog bed or beside her favorite human for a nice long nap. Trinity is mostly potty trained but can spend more time sniffing and alerting you of (barking at) passers-by (humans, dogs, cars) than going to the bathroom when outside, and this can lead to accidents in the house if not vigilant and patient with her while she’s outside. Speaking of outside, and going to the bathroom, Trinity has a tendency to explore and can find ways to wiggle under or jump over fences; therefore, a fully fenced-in and secure yard is preferred, and she must be watched to ensure she does not try to sneak into the next yard to chase that squirrel, stalk a bird, or play with her neighbor dog-friend!
During her first two months with us, she was extremely fearful and hid behind the couch, under the bed, or in the corner of the kitchen. We had to leash her during that time to take her outside and kept her leashed until she went to the bathroom because she was too scared to come back inside on her own (scared of us). If we had left her unleashed outside during this period, she would find a place to hide in a safe corner of the fence, or even try to escape the yard. Trinity’s adopters must be very vigilant with her, especially while she is still very fearful, and be patient as she slowly works her way out of her shell and into her natural self.
Trinity will make a great pet and will be even better with another dog in the household; preferably adopted with her sister, Tatiana. We recommend beagle experienced and patient adopters as it will take some time (perhaps a month or two) for Trinity to fully open up, transition, and become comfortable in her new environment and with her new humans. Once comfortable, Trinity is a very confident and cute little girl and loves stretching as high as she can up the side of your leg (in hopes you’ll bend over and pet her and then she can reach and lick your face!). Given enough time, love, patience, and cookies (treats), Trinity will become your special little girl and steal your heart.
Tatiana has not been around cats or children while under our care, although she seems a little prey driven and may go after cats, hamsters, etc, who live in the home.
(ORIGINAL POST AS A BONDED PAIR WITH TATIANA):
UPDATE - 11 DECEMBER 2021: These shy girls are now in a foster home where they are learning how to not be afraid of humans. We are looking forward to watching these girls come out of their shells. Stay tuned!
NEW - 31 OCTOBER 2021: Tatiana and Trinity came to BREW from the Abington Animal Shelter in Virginia when their owner could no longer care for them. We think they are sisters. We don't know much about their background, but they seem to walk well on a leash. Both girls are shy and need some extra patience and a quiet home where they can adjust to their new situation with minimal stress. They are available for fostering and adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
