About Me
Meet Raven
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 8-9 Months
Estimated Weight: 21 Pounds (estimated 23-25 pounds as an adult).
UPDATE - 10 FEBRUARY 2023: Raven has been with a foster family since New Year's Eve. We've enjoyed having her in our home and work to teach her to sit, lay down, and wait for meals. She gets in her crate on command and is fully housebroken, but she will pee a little if you get home and engage her excitedly (i.e. Shouting, "HI RAVEN! I MISSED YOU!!"). We haven't heard her whine or bark unless she hears us moving around the house while she's in her crate, but we plan to put a nanny cam on her this week to confirm she would make a good apartment/townhouse dog.
Raven is an absolute sweetheart and has shown no aggression whatsoever to the family, which includes a 2-year-old child and a senior kitty. She is not great with social cues and constantly wants to play even if the 2-year-old and kitty are not interested. However, she's also been to the dog park and done well with everyone she meets. Here are some considerations to help you decide if you are the right fit for Raven:
Raven's probably not right for you if: You/your family prefers a friend who is a lazy cuddler 100% of the time as this girl likes to play. You can't provide a fenced-in yard or dog park for running and playing OR consistent leashed time outside. Raven is FAST. You can't risk having a pair of shoes or the leg of the table chewed on a little bit. She is still a puppy getting to know her teeth. We got her an antler toy and a very hard nyla bone which has cut down on wood chewing TREMENDOUSLY.
Do adopt if: You love an energetic dog (at least 1 good walk a day plus time for running in the yard or 2 walks a day and some play inside with toys). You have the patience for training a puppy. We're currently working on not jumping on people. You love to give belly rubs. We can not overstate how much she likes to melt into your lap if you sit on the floor. She loves a good 5-10 min scratch any time of day.
We can't wait to hear from the perfect fit!
UPDATE - 1 FEBRUARY 2023 (initial report from foster mom): Raven is an absolute sweetheart. We've taken her to the dog park a couple times. She gets along with our 2-year-old child so well! She likes our cat, but our cat doesn't like her. Not her fault! Be careful - this little girl will help you find where your yard/fence ISN'T puppy-proof (see one of her photos showing her crawling under the fence!).
Raven is a wonderful and sweet puppy girl, and we are hopeful she can find her forever family soon!
UPDATE - 30 DECEMBER 2022: Raven is now in a foster home, so stay tuned as we learn more about this young girl!
UPDATE - 7 DECEMBER 2022: Raven is now fully vetted and available for fostering or adoption.
NEW - 13 NOVEMBER 2022: This beautiful little beagle mix puppy is Raven. She’s estimated to be around 5-6 months old. She’s super sweet and friendly. She was a stray at the Louisa County Animal Shelter in Virginia, so her history is unknown.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
