About Me
Luna
Status: Fostered
Estimated Age: 3 Years
Estimated Weight: 25 Pounds
NOTE: Partially blind.
UPDATE - 5 JUNE 2025: Luna is such an amazing girl! Her eyes are not perfect, but she does not seem to care and is adjusting well to having limited vision. Here is a video of her on a walk showing how well she does on a leash and can navigate around obstacles.
We hope we can find a permanent home for Luna soon since she may be losing her foster home this summer. She would do well in a home with another dog, but we also now think she would be find by herself as long as her humans can help her get comfortable in a new setting.
UPDATE - 9 APRIL 2025: Luna had a consultation with a special vet opthamologist. She did SO WELL! The ophthalmologist diagnosed Luna with open angle glaucoma- a genetic disease that causes loss of vision, generally slowly but eventually leading to total blindness.
As of right now, Luna is functionally blind in her left eye but can see light changes, but she has some vision in her right eye. Her pressures were much lower today after starting medicated drops two weeks ago. Since she has some vision left, the goal is to medically manage her for as long as possible. We are trying a new medication regimen (drops and an ointment) to get her cornea as healthy as possible, and also treat her for dry eyes which will reduce inflammation. She is a real trooper and takes her eye drops with no complaints as can be seen on this video: Luna getting eye drops
It is likely she will lose her left eye at some point b/c blind is one thing but it being painful is another. There is no real "time frame" for this, but the ophthalmologist said that a new family should be ready to manage this condition with a specialist for the rest of Luna's life.
NEW - 26 MARCH 2025: Luna is a beagle mix with long legs who was an owner surrender and is a WONDERFUL little house dog. Luna has been diagnosed with end stage glaucoma and has limited (if any) vision in both eyes and will be seeing an opthamologist on 4/8/25 to determine what the best course of action will be.
Luna doesn’t let her impairment stop her though! She navigates the house well, can go up and down stairs, is completely potty trained, loves to take walks around the neighborhood and is friendly with kids and other dogs! In fact, I believe she would best thrive in a home with another dog! Here is a fun video of Luna playing with her buddy, Miracle: Luna and Miracle Playing in the Yard
Luna does not like to be confined but is a little angel in the house when left alone. Luna prefers to sleep in bed but does not scoot around and sleeps soundly all night. Previous owners had reported that she experienced separation anxiety, but after a few days of settling in, and another foster dog to keep her company, she has done great when we have had to leave her.
Luna came from a townhome and was used to being leash walked only but thoroughly enjoys using the doggie door and running the fenced in yard at her foster home. She can also be a little vocal when she hears a strange noise (doorbell, people yelling, opening and closing doors loudly) but will typically quiet down quickly once she can identify the sound.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
