About Me
Catarina
Status: Living at our private kennels
Estimated Age: 4-5 Years
Estimated Weight: 35 Pounds
NOTE: Probably best as an only dog.
UPDATE - 30 MAY 2025: Oh no! Catarina lost her foster home and is now back at the kennels. She is so sweet on her humans but doesn't always share nicely with other dogs, especially around food. We hope this young momma can get into another foster home or permanent home soon.
UPDATE - 15 MAY 2025: Miss Catarina (aka Kit Kat or Blonde) has become a wonderful house dog! She loves to play with toys, zoom around the yard, go for walks, and lay around the house. She always looks at us with loving eyes! She wants to sleep with me at night, but the chihuahua & hubby have the bed first! She loves to snuggle when we sit down, be in the kitchen when we are, and get tummy rubs all the time! She’s a very happy dog!
Catarina does very well in the crate. We feed her there because she wants to eat everyone else’s food! She has no problem waiting for the others to finish, she just lays down patiently.
UPDATE - 17 APRIL 2025: We recently discovered that Catarina can be crated! We feed her in it to prevent hassles with the other food-mongers, and she is fine with that! We had two visiting dogs this weekend and did crate & rotate because Cat & one of the other dogs did not get along (both bossy)! The crate works to calm her down when things get too exciting sometimes. She loves to sleep on her favorite chair or another at night, and is so cute when she sticks her tongue out! She does need some tough toys, she’s a player! This video shows her doing a zoomie with a favorite toy: Catarina
UPDATE - 11 APRIL 2025: Catarina is now spayed and ready for her forever home! Here is a report from her foster family:
Catarina loves people! She’s very affectionate, loves to have her face rubbed, tummy rubs, lap time, and walks! She has learned to do her business outside, walks like a beagle (walk, stop, sniff, repeat), and loves to eat! She is always happy and seems to be smiling all the time (with her tongue sticking out too! So cute!) While she is learning to get along with our resident dogs, she has a dominant personality and might be best as an only dog. Feeding time has been challenging, she wants everyone else’s food and not afraid to push her weight around! Toys are a lot of fun and the ears are extra tasty!
UPDATE - 29 MARCH 2025: Good news - Catarina went to a foster home today! Stay tuned as we learn how she adjusts to living without her puppies in a home where she will gets lots of attention!
NEW - 24 MARCH 2025: Catarina and her puppies (Snookie, Scrappy, and Cha Cha) ended up in a Virginia shelter after they were picked up by Animal Control one cold January day. Catarina was found outside with her new babies, so we're not sure if she had been abandoned. The good news is momma and puppies ended up with BREW where Catarina and her puppies have been getting the care they need (puppies are now in a foster home). Catarina is mostly beagle (DNA test said 57%) but is mixed with some Australian Cattle Dog (18%), Norwegian Elkhound (10%), Border Collie (7%), and 8% other breeds. She is currently receiving medication for some prior flea problems, so she has a few bare spots that we hope will grow back in with time. This momma girl is very sweet and smart and will be available for fostering or adoption after she is spayed in April.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
