UPDATE - 7 APRIL 2026: Johannes continues to make positive strides. Fresh off mastering "sit," he's added "down" to his repertoire, and while he occasionally mixes the two up, we love his enthusiasm and effort. He's also hit another milestone: after lots of encouragement, he finally leapt into the car all on his own!
His daycare crew enjoys his company. The staff reports that he loves playtime with the other dogs and has a very friendly disposition with the humans.
At home, you'll often find him working through a kong or a chew toy, or stretched out by the front door, soaking up a patch of sunshine while keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood.
We've been actively working on his separation anxiety, and we're already seeing real progress. After only three weeks, we've seen positive signs and we know if someone is willing to put in the time, we have a lot of faith that he will thrive.
UPDATE - 30 MARCH 2026: Two weeks with Johannes and we're already seeing so much growth. He hasn't had a single accident in the house this past week, a real milestone for a dog still finding his footing.
Johannes is a walker at heart. He loves hitting the sidewalk and greeting every dog he passes, and it's clear that other dogs bring out the best in him. A home with a resident dog would be a wonderful match. Fair warning: if you're into interval training, Johannes will be your coach. In classic beagle style, bursts of striding interrupted by deeply committed sniff sessions.
Back at home, his favorite game is fetch with his stuffed ducky toy. Toss it in the backyard and watch him light up, it's the best way to burn off that beagle energy.
He's continued to show his affectionate personality, and loves to cuddle up and sit on your lap.
At bedtime, Johannes now walks into his crate on his own. That's not a small thing. He's still working through separation anxiety, which we're addressing through daily crate training to build his comfort and confidence being alone. He'll do best in a home that can continue that consistency and give him a little extra patience while he settles in.
UPDATE - 23 MARCH 2026 (initial report from foster family): We've only had Johannes for a week and can already see he is a gentle, affectionate boy who loves nothing more than soaking up attention from the people and chewing on his toys. He's a little shy at first, but give him a moment to warm up to see his warm personality come out. He's been wonderful with everyone he's met.
He's already making impressive strides. Walks that once felt overwhelming now have him trotting along happily, tail wagging most of the way. He sleeps quietly through the night in his crate, and he's learning the ropes of house training more and more each day. He even knows how to sit and picks up on things quickly, so we think he's going to be a joy to train.
He has a playful side too! He loves chewing and playing with his toys and burning off energy with a good case of the zoomies, so a home with a backyard would be great. He also hasn't quite mastered being alone yet and gets anxious when his people leave, so a patient family who can continue working on that with him would set him up for success.
Johannes is blossoming into a loving, happy companion!
UPDATE - 14 MARCH 2026: Our sweet Johannes joined us at today's adoption event and is on his way to a foster home. This is great news for Johannes. We are looking forward to seeing his personality evolve as he experiences being a house pet surrounded by loving humans. Stay tuned as we learn more from his new foster family.
NEW - 3 DECEMBER 2025: Johannes is the sibling to Bronx. He is a little smaller and less outgoing than Bronx and could use more socialization with humans. He seems good with other dogs. The boys were strays from the Cumberland Animal Shelter in Virginia, so their history is unknown. We did a DNA test on Bronx, and we are assuming the mix is similar for Johannes: 80% Beagle, 15% Coonhound/Foxhound, 5% Other. Johannes is available for fostering or adoption.
Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
