About Me
Meet Winston III
Status: Fostered Estimated Age: 1-2 Years Estimated Weight: 34 Pounds UPDATE - 2 DECEMBER 2021 (from foster family): Winston has made great strides in living in a house and even stayed in a hotel with us over the weekend. Good news: He sleeps all night in his crate and keeps his "room" nice and tidy. He hasn't had any accidents in the house (although the hotel room did confuse him a bit, but he followed the other dogs). He has been great on long car rides. He loves to run, so he had a great time at the dog park and he is learning how to walk on a leash - big improvement over the past few weeks. Things we are working on: Counter-surfing - because he is taller than most beagles, he has greater range in sniffing around things he shouldn't be getting into. When he first came home with us, he jumped up on tables and counters, but I think we have broken that habit. He is also a food thief which has caused some scuffles with the resident beagles. Loud noises (with the exception of beagle barks) startle him, so we try to avoid walks around main streets with trucks. He has been great meeting new people - the only person he seems to have an issue with is our dog walker, who I think scared him the first couple of days he was with us (which is unfortunate). Work in progress! UPDATE - 6 NOVEMBER 2021: Winston joined us today at Beaglefest and had a great time! He is now in a foster home, so we will see how this young fellow does as a house dog. UPDATE - 25 OCTOBER 2021 (from kennel manager): Winston was on his best behavior and did very well with his fellow canines and humans alike when he had a chance to visit a dog park. My opinion of him has changed in that I once thought he had quite the energy level, but he was fairly mild mannered with a moderate energy level - definitely not as energetic as some. He is always super sweet with his humans, but he is a typical beagle when it comes to food. He will eat his and anyone else's if he can get away with it. I think he will do quite well with pet life. Did I mention he is a handsome boy!!! UPDATE - 28 SEPTEMBER 2021: Handsome Winston has completed his heartworm treatment and is available for fostering or adoption. UPDATE - 16 JULY 2021: Winston had his first vet visit, and it turns out he is heartworm positive. He will need to go through treatment before he is available for adoption (estimated mid-September). NEW - 2 JULY 2021: Meet Winston the third! He’s a handsome American Fox Beagle (beagle/American Fox hound mix) but more beagle than fox hound. He was given up by a hunter in South Hampton, Virginia, because they were in fear for his life. He was smaller and low man in the pack and had taken a couple of serious beatings. Through all of it, he is still super sweet, social and very dog-friendly. He will be available soon.Questions?
Q: Can you tell me more about a specific dog? Is s/he good with kids / housetrained / good with cats/ etc?
A: What we know is in the write up. Our knowledge about any dog that is not in a foster homes is limited. Once approved, our adoption coordinators will work with you to match you with the right dog.
Q: Can I meet a specific dog?
A: We’re sorry, but you must be an approved adopter to meet our dogs. Pre-pandemic, dogs could be met at adoption days, but you still had to be approved to adopt from an adoption day.
Q: How can I adopt a specific dog?
A: You must submit an adoption application and be approved to adopt. You can do that under Adopt – you can also learn about the adoption process there.. It will take about two weeks for an adoption coordinator to get in touch with you. Please keep in mind that dogs that are available now may be adopted in the meantime. But we are always getting new dogs. You can see them on our website.
Q: Can I add another dog to the list on my application?
A: We don’t hold you to the dogs you listed on your application. It gives us an idea of what you are looking for. Plus it will let us know if someone is interested in one of our special needs / hard to place dogs.
Q: I indicated that I was interested in a specific dog on my application, but I see that s/he has been adopted. What happened?
A: We do not hold dogs. Applicants in the queue before you are being approved and may adopt the dog you are interested in before you are approved. But we are always getting new dogs in and your adoption coordinator will help you find the perfect match.
